how much of a performance boost will there be compared to current PCI-E? is it worth waiting for? or just go with DX10 cards when they come out (ie 8600, 8700 etc...)?

Probably not even half of the bandwidth offered by PCI-e x16 is needed today, so adding more wouldn't do much. PCI-e 2.0 has other enhancements as well, but no, I would have to say that it is not worth waiting for.

    Wait as long a you can . . .

Going to be ages before you see it in notebooks. Going to be a good while before you see it in desktops too. And as Chaz said, bandwidth isn't the main limiting factor at the moment. At least not unless you go with a high-end SLI setup.

I will agree that it isn't worth the wait...it'll probably be a year or two before the spec hits mainstream notebooks. At least.

By far the most exciting thing about the spec is the allowable length of the IC traces. PCIe (1.0) traces are so short that virtually all cards desktop and laptop alike have to be placed within the same chassis. 2.0 will allow considerably longer traces while allowing for the same bandwidth (not more bandwidth...you get more bandwidth when the trace is short though)...can anyone say 'external graphics card?'

But that's a year or two off, and then it has to actually succeed in the market.
