So I've returned to nVidia after what feels like an age. I'm wondering what's the best option for the PhysX configuration option in the nVidia control panel for my system.
    GPU: nVidia Geforce GTX 870M
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4810MQ

The default selection is "Auto". I'm wondering if it's better if I switch that to the GPU?

I believe auto-select will use your video card by default. Forcing to a card usually requires you to have it in SLI, and it'll stop SLI being used in performance mode. I have never actually tried forcing it to a GPU in a single-GPU setup, so I don't know what that does... but good luck! =D

Thanks! I suppose I'll leave it at auto then. :)

It doesn't hurt to try. It won't hurt anything. But iirc I believe it negatively affected FPS setting it to CPU.

    Grest question.
Can you set PhysX to use just the Intel graphics while also using 870M?
Never tried it but someone posted that it worked, not sure if it helped or not with FPS to unload some work on the GPU.

initially auto is good, there is only one game that i opt to change the physx to a gpu instead of 'auto' or 'cpu' in borderlands 2, whenever my physx is set to auto or cpu, the physx option in the grapichs selection menu in borderlands 2 is somehow disabled colored gray, but whenever i select 'gpu' on physx in nvidia control panel, it enables the physx option in the graphics screen. otherwise cant thinks of anything else i leave it in auto most of the time.

PhysX needs an nVidia GPU to run its calculations; forcing it to the CPU results in god-awful performance. The iGPU on the CPU, similar to AMD cards, is not built to run those kinds of calculations, so it shouldn't actually even work.

The CPU option, I believe, actually uses the CPU and not the iGPU. Also, when you're gaming on the dGPU, the iGPU is being unused. Both GPUs cannot be used at the same time.

OK did a little test last night playing Crysis 3 ( last level fighting the Alpha Ceph,Nvidia 780M ,1080P very high settings ).
Using the CPU for PhysX was a mess, going from 20FPS to 70FPS and just unplayable because of the constant jump from low to high FPS.
Using auto settings everything was smooth as butter getting a constant high 50FPS/60FPS.
So use auto settings people! :)

    Are you sure about that?
In any Muxless designed Laptop (non Alienware), the IGPU is still going to be used, because the DGPU has to route the data through the IGPU to get to the display output.
The only way around having to do this, is to have a Muxed (Multiplexer) system like on a Alienware laptop, where you can disable the IGPU, and have only the DGPU enabled at that point to route the data to the display. There is no other way around this in the Muxless design.
That is one of the Motherboard disadvantages of Clevo or any other non Alienware Laptop, and one of the reasons why the Muxless design has gaming performance issues, as data must be routed from the DGPU to the IGPU in order to get to the display output.
The IGPU is always being used regardless in any Muxless system.

I'm dead certain that the iGPU isn't used in this case, because I *CAN* select CPU with my machine and my machine has the iGPU entirely disabled (I can't even select "quicksync" options in rendering/encoding programs). I don't have optimus either (which actually makes my battery life cry, though I can still get a solid 2+ hours out of it =D).
