for those of you who have played the original planetside you know how great this game is with its epic 100v100 battles.

this game came out on 2003 and was way ahead of its time, hell most the people didnt even have DSL,cable lol. its an mmorpg.

its 7 years past now and the game is still being played by many and now there are announcements of a new planet side 2 coming out, titled planetside next.

i remember this game needing some serious processing power to run it smoothly. im wondering what specs i might need to run the new planetside 2. im guessing its the same as most high end new games, but most games are not mmorpg.

since your loading into a huge world with thousands of players playing the same time with huge 50 vs 50 gun battles with everyone shooting at once, wouldnt you need more processing power then most games?

    right now i got a
    m17x r2
    4gb of ram
    5870 with crossfire
    i7 720qm

do you think that i7 720qm will be good enough or should i upgrade to the 920xm because how good it OC's?? because i no im good with my video card, thats good. so i dont know if i should just keep upgrading or does what i got perfect to run the game fine

Cpu is almost never the bottleneck in games, a lot of games barely use half the i7's power. 5870x2 will last you quite some time.

As for planetside I never really saw the draw of the game... if I wanted to shoot things there was CS, and there's always been some mmo around. I've never seen a really successful mmorpg, not to mention the fact that they are always buried in delays and problems.

    cool sounds good.

and if i wanted to shoot things id play cod black ops. i play that on my xbox alot and i love it. but planetside is totally different because its just one big HUGE map and you attack buildings with a huge amount of team mates, i read this was first game to simulate war on a large scale with organized attacks from large groups. i remember having long 2 hour battles with 200 people fighting each other, getting 500 kills in no time. man i miss those days.. i cant wait for the new planetside 2 to come out.

ya no i also read that the 920xm really makes a difference in gaming compared to using a 720qm, are you sure about that? that the cpu really doesnt matter, i no its mostly the video card, but i just read someone that in high end games the extra cores really makes the difference and the speed is significant between the two

It depends on what kind of game it is. RTS games tend to be more CPU intensive due to the fact that it's constantly calculating and stuff and you get huge amounts of units. If it's a shooter, it won't matter as much and GPU will most probably be the bottleneck.

From what you mentioned, back in 2003 the first game can already be played 100v100 without much problems. So it's probably safe to assume that they won't be too heavy on the hardware requirements. In fact, wait for the recommended specs to be announced and from there you can have a good guess of what you need :)

will the sequel still require monthly fees? I was thrown off by that when I was deciding about playing the original.

It's an MMOFPS with RPG mechanics. Having played it for around 3 years I can say I enjoyed it. I actually bought my new laptop mostly for programming and to play Planetside Next.

As mentioned Planetside is a different kind of game. It's less twitch and more skill based. If you saw a sniper on a hill the CS:S strategy would be to get around them and shoot them or charge them or spray and pray. In Planetside you have the option of grabbing a vehicle, donning a cloaking suit and sneaking up behind them, dropping an orbital strike (huge energy beam), getting an bomber, get a flail artillery and hit them fire at them.

This is ignoring the fact that the game was 133v133v133 and was almost constantly at that number in 2006 when people had DSL. I remember buying the game in 2003 and trying to play with 56k :p I had to wait until I got DSL to join in.

Something else that I found put it apart from the rest was the amount of teamwork. Not just in "hey we're together fighting", but you could heal people or jump in a gunner spot in a vehicle.

Yes. I can almost 100% guarantee that.

No information was released about Planetside Next other than the the release time of March or Q1/Q2. Anything anyone says about Planetside Next at the moment is mostly guessing. I'm hoping the population count is raised a little bit. The battles were already huge, but the more the merrier.

MMOFPS is incredibly appealing, this should appeal to anyone who plays cod, an ongoing battle world were leading countries change over night, huge battles, and exp rpg elements, choosing weapons and upgrades. I wouldn't be surprised if the original planetside came up with that for fps games. This is some big new for people who want a game like this, its the right time in the market aswell.

I absolutely LOVED Planetside and played it for at least 3 years. I've never played another game that captured the same feeling of awe you felt when all 3 factions were in an absurd explosive battle over a prime base. There was nothing quite as exhilarating as filling up a courtyard with turrets while fellow players continually pumped out tanks and bombers in an attempt to stop the incoming invasion force. And then the moment when your base was under attack from all sides, some cloaked team with remote mines destroys the base generator, causing the lights to flicker off as the remaining forces try to band together to retake the generator room.

Such a classy game. I tried global agenda to try out the MMOFPS genre again, but it's definitely a different kind of game. It has it's own identity and feel, but it never put me in situations that made me feel like I did in Planetside.

Also, the guilds/clans in Planetside were freaking awesome. 20 of us would hop into teamspeak and plan out the most efficient way to flash-conquer an entire continent. It's always an amazing feeling when 20 players spark an intense war over an entire continent that brings in over 300 players in the span of 10 minutes.

yes that was the main thing for me, it had such great teamwork and coordination it was the best gave iv ever played. i was so addicted to it and i cant wait for the new one to come out because im sure it will look ALOT cooler and now i will have a kickass PC so i should be fine.

i just hope they keep up with it so that there isnt any hackers. i only played it for about two years and never saw any hackers, but now reading about it and looking on youtube it looks like there are alot of hackers. i dont understand why people do that and want to ruin the game. i mean SH** we pay monthly for it and they got to hack it and play unfair, i hate hackers so much i wish there was a way for players to all vote and kick a player if needed incase theres a hacker, ya no like 20 votes and the player gets kicked.. i remember playing a game like that i just cant remember.

In case others don't follow Smedley's twitter. (He's the President of SOE). These are renders that were released as a kind of viral marketing I'd imagine since SOE probably won't directly advertise for the game. >_>

Planet side was the first online game I ever played across the internet... to that point it had only been LAN gaming. :)

First something about technology.... the biggest issue the game had was sound and memory. I think you had to have 1.5 gigs of ram to have smooth uninterrupted play (as well as broad band).

anyway I had dsl but i was behind a firewall that blocked online gaming :p. I remember the day they opened it up I was ready with planet side.

I was so excited when I got in to my first battle and saw several tanks, a few large mechs with different configurations, DOZENS of people on the hill side, several differnt kinds of vehicles both ground and air transport ships, gunships, bombers ..... and that was all on my team!

The enemy base was shielded and as I watched the battle from a distance I saw a platoon of armored people (small mechs) attack the back door. I saw a 'hacker' hack the door open, then I chased with them all down the corridor were we entered the base's 'basement' or something like that. i died several times in all this, but kept going back for more lol. eventually we made it to the generator room (didn't know it at the time) which they blew up then the shields came down around the base and the whole front started moving forward.

I think at this point the third faction joined the fray....

it was an awesome first time ever to play an MMO experience. now i am excited to hear about planetside 2 :)

I am gonna find a link to a video a person made as a commercial for Planet side. it is awesome and just made me want to play more!

EDIT: heres the video that sold me on getting the game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Twyfcncurg

Intriguing. I regrettably decided to spend my money on Star Wars Galaxies rather than SoE's Planetside.

Planetside 2 may have fired up my circuits...and wallet

The idea becomes more and more appealing as time goes on, I dont understand why more companies dont go the mmo route with fps, we'd all eat it up like little fanboys.

from what im reading from peoples post on these planet side forums is that SOE will delay it again and again, also remember it hasnt even been officially announced yet so i bet it wont be released for awhile because when the 2nd quarter comes this year and the beta is not out he will delay the time to later in the year because it was never officially announced, its just him posting in his blog.. i am not going to get my hopes up until i get an official release date. but atleast those pictures shows "one day" it will be out and one day ill be playing it, i cant wait :D

i hope im wrong about this because i really cant wait for this game to come out im probably going to dedicate my life to it for atleast a year lol now that i got money i got a kick*** m17x that can handle the game with no lagg.

does SOE ever hide a games development until acouple months before the beta release? iv never heard of any game that ever did this. i would think it would be a better marketing idea to put the word out in the first stages of the games development not the final stages so that it gets more of a stir. especially when it says its going to be released so soon, but since its not officially announced it can just be postponed again and again, thats what i personally think is going to happen.

+1 - I love Planetside! I was actually thinking a couple days ago about re-subscribing. To this day it's still fairly busy, and the feeling of teamwork in that game is awesome! I can't wait for Planetside Next :)

I think you'll be fine - if anything, the Alienware M15x I just ordered may be questionable in handling this game. I wouldn't be too worried though, World of Warcraft handles a few hundred people in Stormwind/Orgrimmar/Dalaran fairly well. If you have a Core i5 or higher and 4+ GB of RAM you'll be fine for Cataclysm-era WoW, and I can't imagine Planetside Next would be any different.

It's important to remember that each planet/battle map will only have 500 people max (at least from what I remember), you won't have literally the entire game on that one area. And within that map, you've got a dozen or more cities that contain people, so it's somewhat spread out.

That being said, the i7 (as was mentioned) is pretty powerful. If I recall, a 2.26 Core i5 is as fast as a 2.8-3.0 Core2, so while I'm not 100% sure of the i7's placing, I'm sure it's that much faster.

yes your right but thats just him posting on his blog, there has not been an official announcement about the game even being developed yet. i personally believe it hasnt been officially announced yet because its going to take far longer then he says. its so close to march now with nothing more then two screen shots.

I cant wait for this game. There is a very good reason that everyone who has ever played it raves about how good it is, and how they express sadness when it started to die off.

With the state of game engines these days, I would hope they have taken steps to make the game scale to a wide array of setups. Sure , if you have a beast of a pc then you should be able to turn on all the candy. But with it being an MMO it needs to be available to as many people as possible.

I hope they do a better job of serving it, and keeping it alive this time round. And maybe talk to the community who play the game about what they actually want.

I hope they bring it out around Q1/Q2.
