This question is not just PS 2 specific but it's what I've observed with the game.

    PC specs:
    CPU i7 4700MQ @ 2.40Ghz Haswell 22nm Tech
    RAM 20GB
    Motherboard Notebook P17SM
    Graphics AMD Radeon HD8970M
    HDD 700GB Seagate SATA

I was surprised and impressed at how much Planetside 2 got improved last I played it. I was told there were optimizations done by the devs.
I was easily getting 50-60fps. But one thing I've noticed is at some stage during the game GPU utilization drops from 35 to 40% to 5% and the frames drop accordingly.
Also the CPU is comes with Intel Turbo Boost and I can recollect seeing the CPU hit 3.4 Ghz with other software but I haven't observed this kicking in for the game. Always 2.34-2.39Ghz.

I'm guessing the game gets throttled due to temperature. Is there a way to prevent this happening?
Advanced power settings that seem likely culprits were disabled but doesn't seem to have done the trick.

Any ideas will be great. Thanks

If it's temperature, you need to repaste the CPU/GPU... What ae your temps etc? Use Hwinfo64 to monitor them while gaming...

A P170SM should never throttle for that game... I suggest monitoring your CPU util and temps with throttlestop, and using the limit reasons to see if it is indeed throttling.

Your CPU running at 2.4ghz sounds like you have intel speed step disabled or something.

As for your GPU, monitor your temperatures, along with CPU, to see what is causing the drops at the time it happens. You might want to consider updating even your wifi drivers. (in case you are playing wireless).
