    Hi!

I was wondering if there's any way for playing 4k videos in my laptop.

It has a FullHD screen and a GTX 970m. Enough powerful to play this kind of files, I think.

However, every time I try to play a 4k video there's nothing but sound, no image at all, no matter what player I use...

    Why?

I have played 4k on my notebook using the player below, it`s a bit jerky as i only have a low spec system.

A far as i know all 4K video use the HEVC H.265 codec and 99% of GPU`s cannot hardware decode this so software decoding using the power of you CPU is used.

I know that only the newest Intel CPU`s support HEVC H.265 hardware decoding, I dont know about AMD and NVIDIA, but if this is only 8-bit or also 10-bit i do not know.

You can try the Lentoid HEVC codec from the link below (I think it uses the opencl or opengl decoding of your gpu to do part of the work of decoding, you can add it as an external filter with MPC player (browse to the codec files) and i think VLC as well, I am only using 20% cpu and 30% gpu when using it for an 1080p HEVC video, I will have to try 4K

I don't see why a 970m wouldn't be able to play 4k video assuming you have the right codecs and a good video player.

What CPU do you have in case it is using your CPU instead of GPU?

Use GPU-Z to see if your GPU is doing any of the decoding, check both INTEL GPU and NVIDIA GPU usage.

Also set optimus to allow the video player to use the nvidia gpu.

If your gpu`s are not being used, try the hevc codec i posted above with MPC player.
