    Hello,

Based on your experiences with gaming laptops can you please recommend the best cooling pad? One that significantly lowers CPU/GPU temps and has minimal noise.

I own the MSI GT62vr laptop.

    Thanks.

You can usually get enough cooling boost by simply propping up the rear of the laptop a couple of inches higher than the front, and that initiates convective cooling, drawing air from the front to back.

That's how laptop coolers work for the most part, their cooling fans aren't really that effective because they try to be quiet, and even at highest speed won't make much of an impact on most laptops.

There are some laptops that will benefit from the added fan action, but you'll want to ask in the GT62 owners thread, maybe even search there for previous answers about this question:

The Official MSI GT62VR Owners and Discussions Lounge
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-gt62vr-owners-and-discussions-lounge.793857/

For most of the higher end laptops I have used you really have to get high pressure fans to get past the static back pressure designed into the laptop cooling system, or take the bottom off of the laptop :)

I usually tilt the laptop at an even higher angle, sitting the display up high - I don't use the built in keyboard, I use a wired / wireless keyboard / mouse / trackpad so the keyboard angle isn't important to me.

That almost vertical position has increased cooling performance for some laptops as well :)

    What make and model laptop?

That Cooler Master SF19 hasn't been made for a long time, and when it was out I used to see it mentioned all the time on how magic it was, but I think it's BS. :)

The only sellers for it now want $175-$330, and no cooler stand is worth those prices.

20C is so outrageously outrageous a claim, you are going to have to post a bunch of proof of that before I accept it :)

The bottom panel of most laptops are vented and designed specifically for the air flow from the internal fan's, they aren't designed to allow hugely larger volumes of air to be pushed through the laptop from the bottom.

You'd need to pull off the bottom of the laptop to get that much better air flow to reduce temps by 20c, and the fan noise would be outrageous too.

It's just not possible under normal use to expect that kind of temperature drop from a laptop cooler, that's how expectations are unreasonably raised, and then everyone ends up being disappointed.

First... You ask for cooling pad who can lower the temp and same time has minimal noise. Forget it.
Second... If a Mod notebook cooler ain’t a option. Rather save your money and instead use <free> (Coke) bottle caps.

I simply use a stand like steklo x stand or amazon basics ventilated stand to reduce 10C temps w/o any fan running.

I have the U2 and U3 plus, both I use mostly as a stand to lift the laptop for better airflow, their fans don´t do much, and certainly are louder than the laptop fans. I do have an old CM storm I used to use on an Asus I had, and it certainly moves a lot of air....but never saw a huge temp drop as some claim....and certainly very loud.

Thanks gents. So correct me if I'm wrong, if i dont plan on modding a U3, then I am better off not ordering one and just get a lifting stand?

It's all unknown until you find someone with the same laptop reporting temps and results from specific laptop stands :)

Like I said try lifting the back of your laptop a couple of inches higher than the front, maybe lift both a bit to increase air flow under the laptop.

Also, make sure the laptop exhaust is going out into open space, and not reflecting off a wall, or worse into a corner, where the hot air will reflect back into your laptop air intakes.

I used to use a nice picture book, the large tall kind to set a laptop on and then prop the back up with a couple of books. A wood plank and something to prop it up in back also worked :)

Not a lot of people report before / after temp results, or any results at all, just a single huge number that's hard to believe given personal experiences.

If you have a portable air-conditioner some NBR folk use one under a laptop to get forced cold air into them for benchmarking, anything to reduce thermals.

Please post what you try and how it works for you. :)

    @hmscott Thanks for your feedback.

Do you have any before and after temps based on the Cooler Master NotePal ErgoStand III which you recommended? any estimates? If yes please also mention the laptop model. Thanks.

@hmscott do you have any experience of the vacuum style coolers that pull heat from the exhaust vents?

What model/brand do you have in mind? I searched this type of coolers before but unfortunately all of them are only for thin/ulltrabook laptops. No sure if this is viable for those who have 2" thick units.

My X5V6 is under an inch thick. I'm looking to see some reviews with temp differences.

I can vouch for propping the back of the laptop up a little. Almost every laptop I've done that has seen a non-trivial drop in temps.

Just try it. You only need to lift it slightly. Just put something small and sturdy under the back feet like two taped up stacks of coins or something.

Hell, just to test it you could just lift the back off the desk an inch with your hands while load is being applied and watch if temps drop over a few minutes. It's usually pretty quick to happen.

i was using a 260m laptop that would soar to 90c fast...with the sf19 it would hover around 70c 71c

currently i have overheating issues with my msi laptop and am looking for the sf 19 myyself as i know its like a tornado under the laptop

If you have the SF-19 then you should be good without modding.

U3 is more budget friendly and opens up modding possibilities.

is there a place where I can buy a modded U3 cooling pad with bigger fans, antidust magnets, and more volts?

Yup, I had 2 of them for my Asus W90vp I would run when doing long batch jobs, but they weren't practical for every day use, too noisy.

They were fairly large, I tried the smaller ones and didn't help enough, these look just like the ones I had, and I think it's the same manufacturer:

OPOLAR Laptop Fan with Temperature Display and Cooling Pads
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E3Q7FS...1A&pd_rd_i=B01E3Q7FS6&hsa_cr_id=9546078830901

As I recall the 2 of them dropped the GPU's and CPU temps quite a bit. I sold them with the laptop.

As you can see by the noise reading, these new ones are still noisy:
    612OsHk-0NL._SL1000_.jpg
    And, pretty big too:
    61AsQod4LlL._SL1000_.jpg
Nice shrouds to direct and force the air from the vent effectively:
    616WnoV2vaL._SL1000_.jpg
And I recall the temperature reduction claims at the time were met, and even better with 2 of them running, one on each side:
    71abxDJ9XAL._SL1000_.jpg
The one's I had didn't have temperature readout, but I think they were $10 less than these, of course that was back in 2009.

I haven't bought any since because the cooling has been good enough in the Asus and MSI laptops I have had, and even if they help - they were just too noisy :)

1,700+ positive reviews though, so someone likes them :)
