Please boycot DRM games!!!

I just noticed from thee wings of prey post that its DRM and 4 of my games are DRM. I would have never bought those knowing they were DRM. I thought steam didn't carry DRM since only one person cna use a steam account at one timee. Well....I was wrong and i am now pissed off. I will now check everygame on steam and refuse to buy any game that are DRM! I ask that you guys and gals join me and refuse to purchase any more DRM games.

FYI, Steam is one of the most popular DRM ever made. Steam is DRM. It's that simple.

You can pretty much view any game that is bought on Steam as DRM.

Good part about Steam is that you can often buy games at their value rather than $60 for 5 hours of terrible gameplay. Maybe $5 if you are lucky.

 

Well, DRM is limiting the buyer's right but thing is, it's not exactly a full out reason to not buy the game. Steam itself really is a form of DRM but just not a brutal one.

Some DRMs offer limited activations but these can usually be revoked (For example, Red Alert 3 has a... 3 or 5 activation limit but EA provided a revoking tool for you to get the activations back). You can even contact the developers for more activations really but that's just extra effort.

Only DRM I seriously refuse to have is the ubisoft one anyway

 

the ubisoft one is the ones that u only download part of the game and as u advance u continue to download the game right? such bs. Anyway if u can revoke the activations so u can use it for more times than the limit(supposing ur upgrading machine or formatting the HDD) it would be nice to know how to do it properly.

 

Could not agree more!!! Thats why I don't play games like Assassins Creed...

Games that require you to have a constant Internet hock up, thats just wrong...

 

Ubisoft one is the one where you require constant internet connection and if you disconnect from their servers the game shuts down. It doesn't even allow single player games played in offline mode since it doesn't have any form of offline mode. Even if your internet connection is stable, if it's the fault of the ubisoft servers itself being down then you won't be able to play the game. Oh, if the game shuts down when you disconnect it won't save your progress automatically but rather you just lose it and have to start over from your last save point.

I do hear that they made it less evil and actually just freezes your game and wait for you to reconnect to the ubisoft servers instead of shutting it down entirely though...

Ubisoft games tend to have this DRM. HAWX, HAWX2, Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (I think this one is planned to have it) have the DRM. Splinter Cell Titles too i think... Check steam. RUSE was planned to have this DRM but with all those disagreements, they just ended up using steam as their DRM.

For the activation revoking, they usually tell you how. Sometimes it's simply by uninstalling and other times it's by using a tool they provide you with.

Well, I just want to say, chill out guys DRM isn't a reason to boycott games. Even if you do boycott them it doesn't even matter much to the developers since most people doesn't care anyway. End result, they still get their sales and you guys might miss out on some good games. Heck, Batman Arkham Asylum is a really good game with a DRM that's not so restrictive that you'll definitely be missing out on alot to not buy it.

 

can you give us a link to the revoking tools i would like to add that. Also steam is a DRM yes but not really that noticeable....only picking i got with steam is the problem of having to have an internet connection.....my internet blows and my power goes out all the time on base so i am with out internet a lot. I also have 2 steam accounts so if i don't have my main one open before my internet goes out i cant switch until i got internet. Other wise i like steam...auto updates. Keeps them all in one program. Me and all my friends can play LAN games by everyone using one steam account in offline mod ^^ Just that whole needing internet thing is gay...otherwise i like steam a lot...well the fact that steam got WON shut down...that also pissed me off....made trying to get betas of counter-strike much harder to work. Guy's had to build a hosting program and stuff.

 

I can't exactly give the links to the revoking tools. They come with the game itself. Only one I know of that gives the revoking tool so far is EA for their Red Alert 3 game.

 

I suppose I'm confused as to how DRM is inherently a bad thing....
A minor inconvenience to a small percentage.... Maybe.
But bad? Not in my eyes.

I can see how needing to remember to "revoke" an activation could get annoying if you reformat a few times a year, but aside from that, why would you need more than 3-5 "activations" of a game at any given time? Most people don't use more than 2 computers for their daily routine in the first place, let alone 2+ computers that they intended on playing a video game on.

It does play a purpose in reducing pirating however. Not that I'm some anti-pirate nut (when I was younger, I used to pride myself on the amount of material I had "obtained"), it's still wrong, and drives up the cost for everyone else. Preventing something like that is, again, not a bad thing.

 

It really depends on the person really. Most won't worry about the DRM. Some with really bad unstable internet connection will avoid certain DRMs like a plague. Some makes it a habit to reformat their computers every few months so revoking for them is an extra chore.

It's really situational in my opinion. It doesn't exactly combat piracy that effectively either. Look at spore, having the Securom DRM without telling people about it having DRM in the first place and soon it became one of the most pirated games.

Heck, some games with the crueler DRMs out there gave the buyers more trouble than it took for people to just pirate it.

Again, I can certainly see the annoyance to some, but I suppose it doesn't affect me as I'm not a huge PC gamer these days anyways. And if I do find a game, I tend to stick to it. CS for 4 years, WoW for 3 years etc.

 

I am against all drms....steam i can bare....trust me steam has pissed me off more times than i like to think about. I remember when steam first came out....it deleted my whole HL folder.....i had like 50 mods and several mods that were betas that weren't supported and you had to do special installed to get them to work on private servers....you know how long that too me to reinstall? about 3 DAMN DAYS!!!!!! It took me from Friday after school until Sunday night again.....guess what I tried to install steam again....same damn thing again!!!...deleted my HL folder. So i wasted nearly a week to get crappy cs 1.6 to work and the game sucked compared to beta 5.2 and v1.5 So yes io don't like steam and thx for reminding me! But i will give the fact that steam works without issue now and has its pros and cons. I like the auto update. Makes life real easy. No waiting 2 days for a fileshack or fileplanet server to open up to d/l the newest HL update rofl Those times sucked 24 hour lines in a server to d/l update rofl. But the whole needing an internet connection gets old.

 

plz add Tom Clancy's HAWX 2 to the DRM list.. worst game ever.. nobody wants to buy it but i so what want to play it..

 

suck it up and enjoy the game , we won't see the last of Mr DRM anytime soon. Boycotting DRM as a whole is just stupid as most games comes with that crap .. Will you give up gaming ?

You can click the number and the forum will gladly list them... I voted for it, mainly because the poll other choices all make me sound like I'm "super" opinionated about it. I care, I dislike DRM, just not enough to use an exclamation mark.

 

I'm for it in some sense. If it means I can legally download a game friday night and then travell with my laptop on the weekend and not have to worry about the play CD for every game with me......then I am for it!
If it means I can have 26 games in my steam folder which are kept up to date as long as I keep steam open that I can just play at some random time then I am for it.

And on a sidenote I'm semi-for it on xbox where I can downloading my purchased xbox live games as long as I'm signed into my account.

Or maybe on Kindle where I can redownload My books and keep them in snyc between my kindle, laptops and cellphone.

I remeber buying a guide to Myst and getting to use it once as the drm was quite primitive back then.

Great company! Witcher 2 DRM free and they will reimburse anyone for price difference between regions. Meaning if the game is $40 USD, and someone in Britain paid 40 pounds, they will reimburse you the difference!

I hate Ubisoft's DRM and don't buy their games because of it. I don't mind Steam's and Blizzard's approach though. I don't mind having to sign on and activate stuff so as long as they allow me to play the games when my connection's on the fritz.

 

can i play games that require windows live id if I dont have internet at some place?(with a notebook). Ex: street fighter IV cuz I can play with someonelse if i got 2 controllers.

 

If the game has local coop support, sure I guess. I can play my DoW2 on LAN wireless without signing on GFWL

I'm at the same place. Steam DRM is just fine for every publisher out there except Ubisoft, they insist on including their POS DRM even on Steam purchased games. I barely tolerate GFWL DRM (a.k.a can't save a game unless you are logged in) but I don't make any exceptions for Ubisoft.

What's even more ironic is all of Ubisoft's games have been cracked and are still pirated. Did Ubisoft seriously think that Pirates would include their DRM on their cracked software?!?! Way to punish your paying customers...

 

exactly they make me rather magical find the game than buy it. I'll admit i just started buying games like crazy because steam is so easy and CHEAP! but i refuse to buy any further DRM games....plus we all know some of these games will become a classic for us and that these games will not work because their stupid server shut down because they went out of business or supporting the game....C&C and red alart...thank god they made the first decade! I can play C&C 1 and red alert aftermath online again ^^

 

I don't understand how pirating games drives up the cost for everyone else. Companies charge the same amount whether their games are highly pirated or not. The company loses a percentage of its profit, but they don't pass that loss onto the customer through increased prices.

Companies and industries tell paying consumers that pirates raise prices so that pirates feel pressure within their communities. People who would have been neutral on the topic will side with media companies when they feel the pirates are harming them too. However, given the large profit massive game publishers rake in, they could easily take the hit without passing the cost onto the customers- and they often do just that.

It's more company politics than a real threat, imo.

 

You have a very good point. Though it's true that if everyone bought thee game it could be sold cheaper but we know that will never happen. Also not all game companies make alot of money...alot have a hard time breaking even.

I will say they have been wising up or atleast on steam....if someone hasn't bought the game in the first 1-2 years they wont buy it unless its largely discounted...like me ^^ I have noticed games for steam and PCs have been dropping prices A LOT since a couple years ago. Theey finally figured they can rack in a ton of money if they sell older games for 5-15 bucks. Look at me i have spent like 200 bucks on steam in the last 3 months or so and have bought like 60ish games...thats 5 bucks a pop....some were like 1 dollar games to 15 dollar games but all from 50-92% off ^^

some DRM games are brilliant games, DRM has never effected me negatively in the past, it gives me the chance to install on 3 machines most of the time, I don't feel the need to reformat, my laptop cycle is 1-2 years so I don't feel to affected by DRM, However from reading the 24/7 internet connection from ubisoft sounds a bit problematic, I like to do some of my gaming while on holiday offline however when i'm back home that would still not effect me

 

Well, the ubisoft DRM is being hated upon so much that sometimes people just spam or maybe DDOS attack their servers that it goes down for a few hours from the attacks. Last time the ubisoft servers went down for half a day iirc without any explanation nor any prior notice of maintenance or anything. Lots of angry consumers complained but received little to no answer from ubisoft.

Basically, having a stable internet isn't enough. You'll want the ubisoft servers to be up and running pretty much all the time to keep the players happy and able to play. Servers however tend to require maintenance or may face problems at times. If these coincide with the time you plan to play, tough luck you can't do anything about it :/

 

Um... I assume this isn't about the fact that they protect their games? Someone please tell me this isn't about that.

sounds too troublesome, you sure its Distributed Denial of Service attack and not just denial of service attack? if it were a DDOS they should be able to keep it down longer than a few hours ( or they changed their minds and wanted to play again ;D )

Ubisoft's DRM is the future if you ask me. Just look at google's OS, its entirely based on internet connection. There are a lot of down sides on this new method, but what can we do?
