    can i buy an s-video wire and plug it into my TV and will it recognize it automatically and start showing what is onscreen, or will i have to get a special program?

    It should be automatic and will detect the max resolution your tv can handle and set to that. You shouldn't need a special program but you may have to fiddle around with the display settings. Also note that omega drivers don't always support s-video very well.
