Hey, me and my girlfriend are going off to different colleges and we both though that it would be a good/fun idea to play an MMO togethor to keep in touch. I used to play Everquest so im leaning towards that, but I know a bunch of MMO's have come out since I used to play, EQII, WoW, ets... Now, the problem is I dont know which are good/popular/fun, any suggestions to help point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Now I dont want a good game that no one plays and I dont want a bad game that everyone plays, im looking for something fun but that has a pretty good fan base so that it wont be just me in some areas (happened in Planetside and boy did that kill the fun). Thanks in advance for any help!

I would recommend WOW, it has a large base, it is easily accessible to most people in case your GF isn't a hardcore gamer (maybe she is since you both agreed on an mmorpg to hang out with) and runs well on almost any computer in case you guys get laptops through a school program or buy a budget comp. Its also only $20 for the game and 1 month of play time so you could try it out this summer on 1 computer and see if you guys like it and if not well you're not out that much money.

I got my old girlfriend into WoW after playing about 2 years. I stopped playing a couple of months later (late 2006), but now she has about 3 level 70s and knows more about the game than I ever did. I LOVED Everquest, but it is showing its age these days, and I'd recommend World of Warcraft as a somewhat casual/friendly MMO you both could participate in. Believe me, best way to sour a relationship is with XP loss...WoW does away with that sort of thing and brings the stress levels down (till you start raiding at higher levels /facepalm)

If she happens to be uber-hardcore and you guys both like economics, I like EVE Online as well, but it isn't "Jump in and enjoy" like WoW. The learning curve is steeper in EVE.

if she isn't much of a gamer then i would recommand Fiesta, it's a cartoonish MMO and most importantly, free. in Fiesta you pretty much can't do any quests alone because some of them requires a boss monster and most of them require you to go into some place full of mobs so if you would never make it if you are alone.

Guildwars? It has no monthly fees which could be a big advantage if she is a casual gamer.

Play MapleStory lol. It's free, has cartoonish side-scrolling gameplay, and isn't that intensive.

She is a pretty decent gamer, plays oblivion a bunch and has beaten nearly all the mario's/zelda's. Were both going to be running laptops good enough to play these MMO's at max, except maybe EQII, shes got a vostro 1400 with T7100 and a Geforce 8400GS and im gona be running a Asus F8SN-C1 with T9300, and Geforce 9500M. I know WoW is REALLY popular, but is it really that good? I want something with a little depth and complexity, like in oblivion. Im afraid it might be to cartoony, which is why we arent playing Feista BTW, she plays that already and neither of us are very fond of it.

WoW is definitely popular, Maplestory is also popular although more so for a younger audience. Guild Wars is also fairly popular, but it really depends what you're looking for in the game. Personally I'd only recommend Maplestory if you don't want to pay, but if you do go with either WoW or GW.

If you like to keep doing quests to level up, grind, and doing dungeons for good items, then play WoW. I say that because I have played all three, and personally I hate WoW because I hate spending so much time leveling and would much rather go PvP. If you're like me and prefer going to PvP and the such, then get Guild Wars because you wont' have to waste your time getting to max level, and you can get the PvP set for only like $15 or something. Personally I thought Guild Wars PvE was mediocre though, because the servers for the old games are totally not populated, so it doesn't feel like there's many people. I think that in the end WoW PvP is almost the same as GW PvP though, but I just hate having to level so much to get there, not to mention you have to pay for it monthly.

Either way, it's a matter of preference =] personally I prefer GW but I still play WoW cause I paid for the stupid game.. how sad is that haha..

My boyfriend and I played WoW together for awhile. I'd recommend that one! The characters are so cute and the quests are fun to do together. The little events they also hold during major holidays are fun as well. I would also recommend AoC but the first 20 levels of the game are rather individual so my BF and I haven't really played it much together but since we are on a PVP server we tend to stick together when we leave Tortage. But, he gets excited about us playing MMORPGs together.

Dungeon Runners is completely free and pretty fun. The only thing that isn't instanced is the towns, so it is basically Diablo with more people in town, but it is fun, and you can play together.

I can't get my wife to even LOOK at WoW for longer than a minute...
and playing for longer than 5 minutes is pretty much guaranteed to make anyone over 17 very heavily question EVER wanting to reproduce.

My wife loved EQ and LineageII... the models are absolutely outstanding in LineageII... just the grind is hard and the PvP hardcore (XP loss, open PvP).

Conan has pretty high system requirements but is the creme of the crop right now. The only downside I can really see is system requirements. 'Round about level 6 you could adventure together if you wanted.

WoW's pretty good, but it's a real commitment. Early on in the game, things go by pretty smoothly, but as the game progresses it takes longer and longer to achieve what you're looking to do. These days I can fully expect a quest to take a minimum of 20 minutes to knock off, then additional time to turn it in, and even more time to auction whatever I don't want. Still though, it's fun to play and despite a lot of childish players, there's some really great people out there to talk with as you're endlessly slaughtering undead for coin and drops - I do mean endlessly, though.

I'll get flamed for this, but I recommend Dungeons and Dragons Online. The player base is not WoW huge, but big enough that there is always someone to party with. Guild community is great, although there are some Zerg guilds. But the overall server community is very more often friendly towards newbies and offer a lot of help. It's easy going and great for varied/busy schedules in that you can play 20 hours a day or 2-3 hours 1 or 2 nights a week. I can only speak for the (premerge)Aundair/(postmerge)Khyber servers, but I highly recommend the game. There is a monthly fee that scales depending on how long you pay for, but they have a 10 day free trial that can continue to a full account.

For those that played at release and felt there wasn't enough content, there have been several major updates and the level cap is now 16(64 ranks), plus they have released Monks as a player race. The game has it's own little niche, but it is a LOT of fun. If you aren't familiar with D&D rules, it will seem different, but overall a great game and lot's of ways to build a character. LOTS of fun females too. Your GF won't feel alone in the world. Check it out. :)

Almost forgot, check out the Loreseekers on the Khyber server. Tell 'em Stumpee sent ya!

I played WoW, and it was pretty good and i stopped because of school, now i feel like playing something again so i tried the Lord of the Rings Online: Shadow of Angmar, it is REALLY fun, i say it is about 90% like WoW, except it is based on the movie and i like the movie, it is pretty easy going except it is harder to level than in WoW.. Plus LOTRO is Cheaper too, only 9.99 a month if you buy 3 months :D

I played EQ for years. Obsessivly at that, like 6 hours a day. Moved onto WoW, played that for two years, it's alot of fun, I did end up getting bored, but I definalty got my monies worth out of it, from WoW, I moved onto EQ2 on release, it sucked bad then, so I quit. Went back to EQ2 after they did some serious revamping, and it is alot of fun as well. The community is alot more mature than WoW, and the graphics are nice as well. Always played PvP, and I'm 30 if that makes any bearing on your decision.
Personaly I'm not going to play Conan, don't really care for what I've seen, I will try Warhammer online when it comes out, but I don't know if I have the time it takes for a MMORPG anymore.

I vote for Eve-Online if you want something more in-depth. WoW or Conan as the runner-ups.

Playing Age of Conan right now. It's a change from WoW, for sure, but to me it feels like a good change. Takes some time to get used to, but the new battle system alone makes it worth it.
