Besides SC2, are there any RTS games that offer competitive online action that still has a strong community (players available to fight)?
I'd prefer they were cheap and available on Steam if possible, but I can't seem to find any.![]()

Did you try Company of Heroes? Or Company of Heroes Online? Last I heard they are quite popular...
-
I'm assuming that since you're excluding SC2, you're also going to exclude Warcraft 3.
Other than that, the Command and Conquer series (I think 3 was very popular, not sure about 4 or red alert 3) comes to mind, it's on steam but not exactly cheap, and Tom Clancy's Endwar - also on steam, but not sure about the online community.
Not sure what your definition of cheap is, but I don't think any of the games I mentioned are less than $20, maybe except WC3

Company of Heroes is great. Give Sins of a Solar Empire a try too.
-
R.U.S.E. just came out today if you want to get in on the ground floor so to speak.
-
I excluded SC2 because of the price.
I think I'm gonna go for CoH. Sale should have plenty of people to play with.
Thanks. -
With CoH, there are always people to play with online. 1v1 and 2v2 automatches fill in about 30 seconds or so max. Takes a while for me as i am in australia and getting a connection with others is sometimes hard. In the lobby there are always heaps of games that you can join though.

Starcraft 1 multiplayer is free to play from iccup.com.
Warning: The skill level is quite high now that most of the worse players have gone to play SC2
.

The original Coh was the best RTS ever made.
The expansions are questionable. -
Older: Warcraft 3, Starcraft 1, Company of Heroes, Age of Empires 3, Homeworld 2, Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations, Black & White(could be considered RTS?)
More Modern: Sins of a Solar Empire, World in Conflict, Command & Conquer 3, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 -
SC2 is very good. I'm not sure what your budget is, but if you live in the US, there's this store called KMart that's selling it for $40 online. It's out of stock right now, but it may come back in stock before the sale's over.

I almost always buy my games digitally now. I like the convenience it provides.

League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth?

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
honestly, save for SC2. it has a level of polish that other games can't match, and it has a large player base and will keep that player base for a very long time (much longer than other new or newish RTS games)
-
RTS? really now. can;t deny that they are good games, but they are hardly rts.
-
Most RTS are hardly RTS, more like RTT. It's just an umbrella label.
-
My favourite RTS of all time is 'Command and Conquer 3 (with Kane's Wrath expansion pack'. C&C4 is also alot of fun but due to the change of gameplay, it isn't as popular as #3, which is a shame, considering I enjoy both equally.
-
I just tried some CoH multiplayer. LOL
I get owned like none other. How do people build up armies so fast? O_O -
DoTa. It will take time to learn, and you will get flamed a lot if u don't play well with ur team, but once u get into it, you can't stop playing.
-
Constant production and army movement
It's like that when you try it out early on but you'll get used to the pace soon enough
You'll have to be active capturing and denying your opponents the points
-
I don't understand how to increase manpower production.
-
Capture points. MP, Fuel and Munitions all come from capturing points.
-
sigh... what a noob
Company of Heroes Strategies - GameReplays.org -
How about warhammer? That's a decent RTS.
