Uh... Left4Dead or CoD4... Or 5...

CS:S is currently the most popular (# wise)

Modern Warfare 2 when it comes out next month. COD4 right now!
-
I agree with EIement.
I don't use steam but even without it CS:S has tons of players. I've only poked around CoD4 servers a few times, but those always seem packed as well. -
COD 4... steam= trouble with computers... hate steam..

CoD4 for your old school CoD game. CoD5 for a more fun approach to CoD.

Ok thats all i needed to know, i knew they were popular but im gonna buy a game and i wasnt sure whish one was morte popular so i am gonna buy counter strike source and wait for modern warfare 2. ill see for cod 5 later if a nice deal comes along.
btw Im still looking for a game like tribes or something with robots to play in multiplayer and the best star wars game to play online. im gonna look them up now
thx guys for the help. -
If you're into cartoon shooters, TF2 has been going strong for like 2 years now. Has a growing community if anything.
-
if your gonna buy CCS be sure to find a good server fast. otherwise its bots, wall hackers, racism, stupid jokes, and bad language galore. also one more thing if you have never played it your atleast 4 years behind most players.
-
TF2 for payload. (more team based than other modes) or css for regular style games. left 4 dead is also awesome

-
I much prefer Steam over retail disks.
-
I imagine it's much harder to control that with all the unofficial servers, since for example, I don't have a real steam ID and I'm sure many of the other players don't as well. -
cheaters can still play even on VAC 'secured' servers based on my experience

Id say the most popular online shooter is TF2, never a shortage of people or games and its cheap to buy and easy to run.
While I like the game it was never as intense as say BF2 or BF2142, I loved those games.
I imagine the newer Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising is going to be popular and the soon to come Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 -

and when is the new alien vs predator coming out. im def. getting that one
Operation flashpoint doesnt look like it is my thing. too tactical, little slower then the rest -
Same thing goes for Garry's Mod -
For some reason people can't handle the thought of getting beat, so anyone who is consistently very good, especially if they're killing you, must be a cheater.
I know because I was one of these people in Call of Duty 2, and everyone on my team was as well (played competitively). There were only two public servers that all the pros hung out that I could go into without ridicule (except maybe getting called bad). If I went into any other pubs, I was consistently accused of hacking, complained to, ridiculed, kicked, and even banned. I wasn't hacking - I just played ~40 hours a week. Play 40 hours a week of just about any FPS and you'll likely get called a cheater too.
Valve is usually very good at finding and eliminating hackers. -

CS1.6 or CS Source. Most steam servers are hacker free nowadays. I've never met a steam hacker so far.

Anyway, at this point I'd say Call of Duty 4 and Counter-Strike (1.6 or Source) are pretty much equally popular, although I personally thing CoD4 is the superior game. -
Either way, I feel like BF2 is still really popular for some dumb reason. # wise, I don't think the TF2/L4D community combined can even match the CSS/1.6 community still. -
Steam is awesome. There's only one thing I hate about Steam, which is how if you delete the icon from the desktop, it automatically re-creates it next time you run steam from their start menu shortcut. The fix is easy, just make your own shortcut to the steam.exe, but it's still a pain. Well, not a pain. It's just always irked me.

I love steam. especially when compared to D2D. there was nothing but hassle after hassle with all the games I bought from D2D. I can't complain tho- they were only 5$ each. but install issues, crap download speeds, lack of support etc. Only issue I've had with steam is a corrupt backup of L4D requiring a re-download.

I'd have to agree with everyone..
Counter-strike: source, even though an old game is still going strong. I play CS 1.6 since it's about the same and I already have it. I still play now and then.
Team Fortress 2: awesome game, I play this the most, and play it a lot. It's really fun once you get good at it, but it's very frustrating if you are new. The learning curve is steep, and the good players are REALLY good, so good that you'll get owned pretty hard and the game will not be fun. The difference in skill level is pretty far apart. But watch some youtube videos on how to play some classes and you'll do just fine.
Left 4 Dead: Never tried it but a lot of poeple are playing it. I was thikning about purchasing this and see what all the fuss is about.
COD 4: Another great game, I played this a lot but recently stopped. Don't think you'll be disappointed. COD 5 to me was not as good.
Battlefield 2 - I played this a lot with my buddies in college...4 years ago. Was very fun, great team work and game play is awesome. A lot of team work involved, good graphics, hours of fun. I thikn there's a new Battlefield coming out about the same time as COD 6. -
^I agree with that point about TF2...it's an excellent game, but fairly hard on beginners; there's really no tutorial mode, and the loading screen tips are way outdated. Plus, the random drop system is never really explained in game and must be confusing as hell for new players. Speaking of which, I found my first hat last night (Sniper's trophy belt!), but that's for another thread.
