I am currently thinking of cancelling my 1.76kg Dell M1330 with a NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS for the 2.7kg Song FZ with NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GT. Is it worth giving up portability for this graphics card?

How many games do you plan on playing? It all comes down to your priority... Can you live without extra eye candy if it gives you more portability and less strain when carrying it? I personally wouldn't but it comes down to your preferences.

it's not that you're getting a kickass video card for the extra kilogram anyways. If you really want the video gaming I would go for a 3,1kg Asus G1s instead of the sony.

NO, unless you´re ready to pay top money for it. The Sony guys have been using a cheap policy consisting in putting below average dedicated memories in their video cards. The other day I happened to see some FZ with 64mb! video memory at the mall. Provided that the ideal specs for that card come with 512 mb, it should give you an idea.

I´ve seen it in many posts, including some of the ones I participated. Do a search if you want to know more.

    no, definitely not imho.

Although the 8400GT is a much better card than the 8400GS, probably much more of a difference than the little difference between the 8600GT and 8600GS.

the gt version of both cards is considerably faster than the gs version.

8600m gt vs gs and 8400m gt vs gs

the 8400m gs is barely faster than the 7400 / x1400, with the added feature set (dx 10).

the 8400m gt is barely slower than the 7600 / x1600, again with the enhanced feature set.

the 8600m gs is barely faster than the 7600 / x1600

the 8600m gt is barely slower than the 7900 gs.

now that that is settled, we can step back and ask, is it better to have portability or performance?

it makes sense to me. each increment up the chain of the 8 series marks a significant increase in power, and a significant increase in power/heat which lessens portability.

suffering 6 pounds for an 8400m gt makes no sense.

if money is no object (primary considerations are portability vs performance), at 5.5 pounds you can squeeze in an 8600m gt (macbook pro).

Why take 6 pounds for an 8400m gt?

i say- go for the dell. it is super small and it will serve you well. portability matters more to me.
