Its been a long time since I had a game I couldnt master pretty quick. Portal only took me a couple of hours to beat the night came out. After beating the game you get some bonus stages, advanced maps and challenges.

I beat all the advanced maps with no problems (18 took awhile but I did it none the less) the challenges tho are insane!

I have beat the portal count, time and steps challenges for 13, 14, and 15.

So I am on 16 now trying to do the time challenge. I spent 6 hours trying last night and it is so freakin hard! I got 53 seconds one time wich is 1 second too slow, but usually im at 56-58 seconds.

Has anybody beat this one yet? How hard was it for you? I even used youtube to see these ungodly masters of portal that must be computers beat it and hardly anybody was able to get much better than 52 seconds (besides one really insane guy who was at 39 seconds but he moves so fast his video wont even keep up)

Besides that, "camera shy" I have beat the game 8 times and every time I am one camera short, I really dont know wich one I am missing.

Yeah I know, I cant beat it even with a video :/ its really really time sensitive one second of a mistake and you wont make it.

Thank god I finaly got it with a hybrid of alot of the different videos, was very close too. I bet I was .000001 seconds before 53 would have ticked.

****e. I haven't started those levels yet, maybe I don't want to. That stuff just kills the game for me. I hate timed stuff in general anyways. I want to play and explore at my leisure and not worry about making an exactly perfect run to win.

Yeah thats why for the most part the portal count challenges were fun, it made me learn some neat tricks thinking ... "how in the world can you beat this stage in only 2 portals" then you look around and a light comes on and you figure it out.

The steps and time challenges are not so fun, and now that I am on challenge 17 things are on the verge in insane and not fun at all. Infact the only way people are beating the time challenge for 17 looks like a bug to me from the youtube videos I have seen.

You will like the advanced stages tho, its just a harder version of the old stages, adds difficulty but not too much.

It wouldn't be a challenge if you could sit there and slowly plod along. You can explore as much as you want in the main game.

Sure it would. It seems a little odd to me that speed with a computer mouse would be considered a valid type of challenge for a game where you problem solve, for the most part. Make the problems harder and make people think about how to succeed in the simplest way, sure, but twitching a computer mouse around is more like what you do in a fast-paced fps.

Or (haven't got it yet), is Portal one of those as well?

Portal is a puzzle game. It's not about being fast, but being able to solve problems.

Only a few of the advanced/challenge maps have a time limit, and they are totally voluntary. However, I think that being able to solve a map with a strict time limit is fantastic, and definately improves the quality and difficulty of a puzzle.

Most of the advanced/challenge maps are about serious problem solving, and are usually about making the maps more difficult, using fewer portals etc. It is an amazing game.
