Hey, I use a Dell XPS M1710, with the specs in my signature.

I do some gaming, NFS: Carbon, NFS: Most Wanted, CNC3:TW, CS 1.6, CS:S, and the NBA/NHL/Madden Series. My idle temps are 38~ (CPU), 45~ (GPU), 46~ (Memory), 47~ (Chipset), 43~ (Hard Drive). I measured these using I8KFANGUI. Underload, the CPU hits around 70~, and sometimes 80/81~ for the GPU, and the Memory & Chipset hitting 56~, and the Hard Drive hitting 48~. I'm not sure if these are normal temperatures for an XPS M1710, as I haven't been able to find any 'average' idle/under load temperatures. Also, I define 'under-load', as playing NFS: Carbon, or any of the games that lag. I'm hoping to have maybe a max of 60~ Underload, and 70~ for the GPU, with the Memory and Chipset hitting 50~, and the Hard Drive hitting maybe 45. And for Idle, around 30~ for the CPU, 40 for the GPU, 40 for the Memory & Chipset, and about 38~ or the Hard Drive. I plan on opening my Laptop up and cleaning the dust out when I get my hands on a canned of Compress air, but i'm a bit hesitant on buying some Arctic Silver 5 and applying it, in fear of screwing something up. :( I was thinking of getting the Spire Pacific Breeze, as i've heard that it does a really good job of lowering Idle & underload temperatures. The Noise isn't an issue for me, but if anybody else has any other suggestions on ways to cool my laptop down, that'd be great!

Also, I'm on a Wooden Desk right now, but I AM getting a Glass desk in the week or so, so I expect that should help lower the temperatures, since Glass is generally cooler than Wood. I would use Marble, but I can't really afford something like that :p

I'm also waiting on Quake Wars, UT2K7, and NFS: Pro Street

Now, my first question is, will my 7900GTX 512MB be able to run Quake Wars, UT2K7, and NFS: Pro Street well? IE. Smooth frame rates, but also looking nice.

Second, When I play NFS: Carbon, and NFS: Most Wanted, CNC3:TW, and sometimes CS:S, there will be periods where the game will lag. It'll last for about 30~ Seconds, and then it'll be gone, but then it'll come back. But when I play games like CS 1.6, NBA/NFL/FIFA/Madden, It never lags like that, so I guess the games that lag are more GPU/CPU Intensive?

I notice it happens when there's a lot of stuff on the screen, although even when I turn down some of the settings, (IE. Turning AA/AF Off), it still happens.

If anybody has any insight, or suggestions on how to cool my baby down, that'd be greatly appreciated! I might have to think about selling this, and getting a desktop, and then also putting ina bit more money for a smaller laptop, I'm thinking a Dell XPS M1330, since I won't be doing much gaming on it, and I heard that it doesn't run all too hot.

    - Phil

Your CPU if that is right is way too high if it reaches 80 degrees, I assume you mean your GPU instead of CPU. Clean out the dustbunnies and clean the fans of your CPU and GPU that will help.

Also the heatpads Dell puts on the CPU and GPU is crap, believe me, if you would open up your laptop and take a look at how much there is left of them you would be surprised. They can't stand the heat, they melt away, the only way is using AS5.

    Sorry, I should fix that.

It does say CPU Reaches about 70~ Celcius, but it never actually reaches over 65, that's just a typo, heh.

But I'm really interested in wondering if I can play NFS: Pro Street, UT2K7, and Quake Wars with smooth frame rates and nice eye candy.

And if the Spire Pacific Breeze will do anything to help lower my temperatures.

This is shortening the life-span of my baby :(

Hmm is your 7900GTX overclocked? You could easily overclock it and reach better performance. But I think you'll be able to run Quake Wars nearly maxed, don't know about NFS though since NFS Carbon were quite intensive in system specs. Same with U2K7 I think you can run nicely on your setup.

Nah don't worry it isn't shorting it, these notebooks can withstand a great amount of heat. Though your CPU is a little worrying, just clean it and you'll see your temps drop by a large margin.

How do I measure the Clock Temperatures for my 7900GTX?

I've been googling a program that can measure clock temperatures for Video Cards, but No luck :/

Also, I read somewhere that Core 2 Duos can reach up to 70 Celcius without much of an issue.

I take it maybe Core 2 Duos were made to run a bit hot?

65 degrees C is fine for a mobile cpu. Above 80 is when you should start to worry. 80 degrees C is fine for a gpu, these are engineered o get much hotter than cpus. 48 degrees C is ok but a tad hot for a hard disk but shouldn't cause any problems.

Ahh, okay. I've been worried, because in Desktops, they shouldn't be running this hot, save the GPU, but the CPU shouldn't reach 65 I don't think.

Thansk for your help, but does anybody have any input on the Spire Pacific Breeze cooler?

Well, I took your suggestion, and I'm testing out the Maximum overclock from ATI Tool. Maybe it'll hit 7950GTX Speeds

Anyways, Hopefully the lag stops during the games :D

But on a side note, the Laptop Cooler SHOULD help with the heat right? Like it should lower the idle and under-load temperatures?

It might lower by a few degress, don't expect much though. Best is if you clean your laptop from dust.
