Im not far in the main quest, but have done every side quest I can find so far. I am lvl 13 and think because I really did not understand the stats and what they do, nor there caps that I "messed up" my character some.
Its not the end of the world I can still manage to survive but I really am scraping by enemies take me down fast and it takes soooo many shots with any of the guns I have ammo for to kill them (tons of super mutaints and robots)
I wanted to be a "sneak" person so I have sneak @ 100 and I am very dissaointed that many enemies see me still even with it maxed.
I have small gun ~50, energy wep~50, repair ~50, pick lock 75, my perks focus on sneak/small guns, I have a maxed out agility, and high perception but my speech & charimsa suck. Endurance is kinda low too.
I may re-roll soon and do a maxed out Int at the start for more points, and then go for high strength and endurance and focus on hand 2 hand combat as my main (no more ammo problems) and high repair (make money off it and keep my stuff fixed up, repairing my stuff at NPC has costed me a lot) sub in small guns to shoot down the guys I cant reach.
I'll max this stuff out asap and come back for barter or something later, I have a feeling the game will be so much easier next run with my fixed stats and that I will have much more money. I may also get the find more ammo & money perks next time through.
Can you have two different games at once? or if I start a new one does it kind of over write it? ( I guess you just have to keep an eye on your saves and you can have more than one)

I too jammed a lot of my points into sneak at first only to find out that sneak doesn't do a thing. Lockpick was probably the most useful skill throughout the game...to help get you a lot of booty to start off, definitely max that. Repair is also very useful as it helps keep your damage and armor up as well as help manage weight during a mission (especially if you are a kleptomaniac like me). Small Guns ended up to be more effective than my energy weapons because I ran out of points so I should have just invested in small guns and spread the rest of the points elsewhere. After all if you can't drop an enemy with headshots from a Chinese Rifle and Lincoln Repeater, then there's always the Fatman... Science I put 65 points because there's that lab coat that adds 10 more if you ever run into those "at least 75 science to hack" computers. Healing at least 60 to get a very important side quest. The rest I kind of threw around because I didn't know what I was doing. Speech and barter would probably be good...
But yeah kind of choked that I wasted all those points on Sneak. -

I would have been much better off raising my killing power stats rather than sneak. The only thing sneak will work really well with is a sniper rifle but as usual no ammo for it
I have the perk to let you run & sneak it made a difference to the low lvl mobs but anything I fight thats higher than a raider still see's me somehow.
My sneak archer in oblivion just owned all. But next roll no sneak points for me and get killing power and healing instead, kill faster = less dmg taken and faster moving through the game. Not to mention just running everywhere instead of sneaking will make things much faster.
By the way whats that important side quest you need 60 healing for? Its not Rileys Rangers is it? I just beat that today and there are 2 other ways to start that quest that do not need healing. -
oh yeah riley's rangers would be the one i was talkin about. How else can you start the quest? Just show up on the rooftop? But yeah best armour in the game. the Moonbeam quest is pretty good too in terms of reward.

I went with a balanced approach and put emphasis on the support skills and small guns since I didn't really know what to expect from the game. Only things I didn't put any effort into were melee and charisma based stuff. I'm at level 16 now, but killing the NPCs got easy around level 10 for my build as long as I prioritized my targets well and started at the furthest range possible with the hunting rifles. Only NPCs that give me a challenge right now are Deathclaws and most Mirelurk variants.
Riley's Ranger armor is one of the best, but Tesla armor is sweet if you've got emphasis on energy weapons.
For my next play through I'm gonna go with a melee based character so I can try out the powerfists and sledgehammers! -
I just bought FO3 for my desktop, haven't even installed it yet (scheduled for the weekend). Takes me all my willpower not to install it and start playing immediately.
-
"scheduled?"
NEVER SCHEDULE VIDEO GAMES!
Open the box now. -
I've got too much work to finish before Friday. Reports to write, and some personal stuff to manage. If I don't get that done, I'll be 'scheduled' to be fired. -
I really approached Fallout 3 with what I learned from 140 hours of Oblivion
Lockpick, Repair, Science, Medicine, Small guns, Big Guns are all high. About 70-80 point. I haven't maxed anything out though; but it's enough to lockpick/hack most stuff in the game and you get tough/handy enough to kill just everything in sight. Medicine and repair are must-haves as well.
Sneak, hand to hand are very low.
Speech can be fun and useful; so it's like 50-60 points. But you can always use specific boosters/items as well, for better speech in case you need it..
I really liked these stats and the gameplay that went along with it. Superb game!
Again, I think those hours I spend around in the Oblivion-world really helped me along in Fallout. It's all basically the same principle. -

yeah the armor is good, best for a sneak char like what I have now. Next run with the melee char the power armor will be better though.
I downloaded a stats calculator and was messing with it last night. I have my build pretty much figured out. 9 Int for sure is a starting stat for me and right away I am going to b-line to the bobble head for 10 int.
The main chalenge next game is going to be trying to get everything as fast as I can at ultra low level (want the deathclaw gauntlet by lvl 5 ect) I am pumping all my killing skills right away, even though speech honestly is probably one of the better skills for early game since you can double your caps reward from almost any quest. Im thinking for a sub weapon when hand 2 hand is not viable to focus in explosives because they do so much damage, also because the explosives perk gives repair too I think and repair I am maxing. -
well, i dont even know what are my stats lol, i'm just killing every good person i see in my face xD
-
I just uninstalled it... I got out of vault 101.. spent too much time in the children of the atom area, and I got really really really bored of it

From previous games I knew that skill points are king and thus INT (and anything that gives skill points) pays off bigtime. My remainder SPECIAL points are in Perception, Agi, and Luck and I left everything else average.
I have always been partial to explosives, and explosives and energy weapons share a stat so my repair, energy weapons, and explosives are tag skills with other points (from int) spread in lockpick, science, medicine, and some in speech.
I begin combat with well placed mines, a few thrown grenades to soften the targets and a few VATS energy blasts to finish anyone who manages to get through those.
I am still relatively early in the plot, so my explosives skill is decent, but not concentrated too hard in right now where repair and energy weapons are my main and the other points filtered when I need something.
A small hint for energy weapons users is that you CAN get an energy weapon and a reasonable supply of ammo extremely early in this game.
I plan on staying with this build, but adding a lot more to explosives (and grabbing the explosive damage perk) through the end as so far it is a lot of fun. -

I found a stat calculator and got my guy all planned out. Pretty much only gettnig perks for abilities and none for + tecniqe because with high Int, books, and bobleheads and the one perk that adds +3 skill points you can max out all of the skills you want easy so save those precious 20 perks for things you cant normally get.
In my case:
7x Intense Traning (may be 6) because there are many perks that require a min SPECIAL Stat also they boost things I want/need.
1x Educated - For skill points
3x Iron Fist - +15 dmg unarmed pretty much a must for melee
1x Bloody Mess - 5% dmg boost plus make people explode with my hands (fist of the north star!)
1x Toughness - 10% dmg reduction important for meele for sure
1x Strong Back - I find myself over weight alot so I need this, though with my melee guy I wont need to carry as many weapons so I may be able to trade it for something else
1x Finesse - +5% Crit(My luck will be 10 so thats 15% crit base)
1x Mysterious Stranger - Sounds cool and more dmg is always nice, but if I find that I kill very fast on my own I will get something else here.
1x Cyborg - Mostly for another 10% damage reduction
1x Better Critical s - 50% more dmg with a crit, will work so nice with my high crit % build
1x Paralyzing Palm - The overpowered 30 second stun for unarmed combat
1x Ninja - +15% crit and +25% dmg on sneak crits. This will put me at 30% base crit chance and make my sneak crits do +75% more damage. With the Deathclaw Guantlets I bet thats like 1 hit kills to most enemies even the stronger ones.
My Special Stats (with bobblehead & quest)
8, 7, 10, 3, 10, 7, 10 (S.P.E.C.I.A.L)
My Skills - Most Maxed just lacking in guns because I wont use them, and no barter and low speech.
Main weapon will be Deathclaw Gauntlets & Shocker for unarmed and a rifle of sorts for long range to sub with, and a nice collection of explosives.
I did not want to worry about sneak this time around since I think it does not work well, but Ninja perk requires 80% sneak... 15% crit is too good to pass up so I will still get the 80% sneak just for that perk. -
To ViciousXUSMC - Since I'm here at work and they have most gaming sites blocked from us (Blast it!) if this Fallout 3 stat calculator is small enough can you attach it to this thread? I'm interested in playing around with it.

I do not know of any thread attachments lol.
Its a super small file just a microsoft excel spreadsheet.
I started my new guy BTW and he ROCKS! Hand 2 Hand is so powerful and fun. My stats followed my chart closely but I am adjusting as I go for what I need. Like my Unarmed skill is low right now because I still kill everything 1 or 2 hits (TONS of Crits w/ 9 luck & my Deathclaw Gauntlet) I just relized that I will be a insane killing machine by end game.
10 luck - 10% crit
Finess - 5% crit
Ninja - 15% crit
Deathclaw Gauntlet ~5% crit
Quest Reward 3% crit
+50% crit dmg perk
+25% sneak crit dmg perk
I'll be dang close to 40% crit rate, have armor piercing attacks, maxed out HP & Damage Reduction, the ability to stun for 30 seconds. I only wish there were some "Boss" things to kill because even the strongest mobs in the game will drop like flies.
I raised lockpick to 50 fast, repair is at 80, and I got exlosives to 25 for the Megaton Bomb. Now I am debating getting Science up to 50 for the quest in the Roboco facility so I can get the +3% crit reward. I have enough points to do that just that my unarmed will be rasied later than I expected.
My Int is 10, I had the bobblehead @ lvl 2!!!
I found the Agility one on accident while looking for a town, and ironicly enough while roaming around looking for a town I found the random encounter with the wounded deathclaw, so I had my deathclaw guantlets & schematic @ lvl 4! I got the Fisto! weapon same level (thats what I was looking for when i found the other stuff)
Edit: here is a screen shot of my genral stats layout. Keep in mind I am not following this exactly I was just pretty much seeing how to spread my points out and still get what I need, also this does not take into account ANY books. So I will have more skills than this based on the books I find. Im no worried about skill points so not getting the perk that doubles points from books, but thats a good perk.
