Prema has released v2 of his 980M and 970M mods - GSYNC or no GSYNC - fix for 361+ and new base

As some of you are aware, I have been testing a 361 series compliant 980M vbios. Prema has now deemed the mod as stable and has released it for both standard and G-Sync machines using a new base. Remember, do not flash a G-Sync vbios to a Non-GSYNC machine and vice versa!

    Non G-Sync: https://biosmods.wordpress.com/gtx9/

    G-Sync: https://biosmods.wordpress.com/gtx9-g/

As always, flash at your own risk. And don't forget to donate a beer or coffee for his time if you can. Enjoy!

Prema hasn't had it tested on the AW18 yet. If you're willing to test it, he said it won't brick but he isn't sure if the second fan will spin properly so if you want to test it, feel free and just report back if the fan works.

He's been quite busy lately but I've been in communication with him (I emailed him to ask him about the 18 and he got right back to me) - it's up to you if you want to test it or not, I just don't know if he has plans to release another Alienware-specific mod right now.

I have never done this before, but I just got a Sager with a non-Gsync 980M running the current/v1 Prema BIOS. What is the best way to flash the card? Is it a matter of creating the MS-DOS bootable flash drive, putting the files from the Prema .rar archive in the flash drive's root directory, disabling UEFI, booting from the USB, hitting 'update' at the prompt, and letting it do its thing, making sure to shut down and unplug the machine when I'm done? I would assume I need to uninstall and use DDU to remove the existing GPU drivers.

I'm particularly apprehensive about this as the Sager is the 9772, so there's no iGPU to fall back on if I screw something up. Help/advice is greatly appreciated as I would love to run something more than the 359.00 drivers.

Actually Maxwell is entirely different. You need to go to device manager, right click your card, and hit disable then just run batch script for the first card, follow the prompts, then enable the card and reboot.

If you have any CPU or RAM overclocks or tweaks enabled I would turn them off just to be on the safe side but the flash is very straightforward and it is over very quickly.

This is with the drivers installed from within a full boot of Windows? I don't need to uninstall the drivers and/or boot into safe mode?

Correct and Prema just corrected me, you don't even have to disable the driver anymore, he patched that as well. =)

All that is required is to flash the Clevo version and report back here the result. If it doesn't work properly just flash back to the Alienware version on his site. The Clevo and Alienware versions can be flashed on either machine, it's just that on some bases Alienware machines need a fan fix which is why there are separate versions.

all i need now is modded INFs for 361.75 and test to make sure no boot loops happen.

Theorectially the new vbios should still work with the 359.xx drivers?

I'm running an undervolted custom 1.1.1 vBIOS he made me. Does anyone know what else is new in 2.0, is it literally just support for 361+? Also, as for 361 not being able to be installed or whatever, is that literally only for GPUs that require modded INFs for installs, or is that for every Prema vBIOS GPU?

Pardon my ignorance but why would you need a modded inf for your card? My NP9772 has the old Prema vBIOS and I was able to install the 359.00 drivers from NVIDIA.com straight away.

Would I need a modded inf for my card after updating to this BIOS?

I had the boot loop problem on mine when trying to install 361.xx but had no problem with the 359.00 reference drivers, no modding needed.

There's no theory about it, I was running them when I flashed this to test it. All drivers work as intended.

Laptopvideo2go has an INF mod in the forum I believe.

Prema just fixed it to support new drivers. It is very likely that if you want to run any drivers after 359, you will need this new mod. Prema hoped that it would only affect 361.43 and 361.60 but now that it has been released in a Game Ready driver, it seems unlikely that nVidia will revert the changes in their code that cause the conflict. Just shoot him a message and ask for an updated undervolted mod, that's what I have.

Modded INF is only needed for systems that don't officially support 9xxM (such as the Alienware machines that were upgraded and Clevo EM machines, etc).

What does it show under sensors? It's working for me.

Try running a 3D app before opening GPU-Z and see.

The modded INF should work. If it doesn't, it just won't install that's all.

The vbios for the GSYNC DM models is up on Prema's site, ZM comes tomorrow.

    https://biosmods.wordpress.com/gtx9-g/

Prema just informed me that the base he used for the new vbios is so new that GPU-Z doesn't have support for it yet. When it gets updated, it will show the correct clocks but Inspector and 3DMark show them correctly.

I wish I could help you but I have never made my own INF mod before and I'm packing for a move tomorrow so I'm not at my laptop. In the past before nVidia supported mobile graphics in their drivers, I always used the modded INF from laptopvideo2go and it never failed. It's worth a try since it does the exact same thing that any other mod that worked would - adds the proper device ID to the INF.

I pulled the INF from 361.60 on their site and combined it with my 361.75 to make my own INF. It works. Try this and see if it has your ID, there's a ton of them in there ranging from Windows Vista all the way through 10.

they do have an inf for 361.75 though i am concerned because j95 always does 2 files for some reason so that's why i am a bit worried.

    I didn't see the 361.75 file.

Either way, its worth a shot. J95 will get around to it I'm sure but at least for now you could see if an unmodded driver works. This is a new vbios base completely after all. If the INF doesn't work right, its no big deal to remove it.

I had to use them on M17xR1 for my 260M GTX cards and on my 8700M GT that was in my Satellite X205-S9359. I always just used laptopvideo2go though, was too lazy to mod them myself when I had other projects I was working on or WoW to play.

Back in those days, I wouldn't have had any qualms about flashing a GPU BIOS. Having pretty much exclusively used Macs since 2008 has made me soft LOL.

Good to know. The nice thing about that INF mod is that it doesn't use the section garbage, just the OS and the card vendor and device ID.

LOL well one of my projects I was speaking of was when OS X Tiger for x86 leaked and it was only bootable in VMWare or an image written directly to the hard drive. I went through two DVD burners figuring out how to get OS X to boot from the DVD, then figuring out how to tear down packages so the kexts that were modified got installed, then I figured out that the Playstation Patcher Format (PPF) was perfect for incremental updates... And I was the first person running OS X to get 3D going on a non-Intel GPU. So even in the Mac arena I still would mess with things haha.

Anyway it's ridiculously simple to flash the vbios these days. Literally point and click.

My temps are fine. Did you check to make sure your 2nd fan is working properly? Prema noted that may be an issue on Alienware machines.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm just curious what are the advantages of the Prema modded vBIOS compared to e.g. a standard OC-unlocked vBIOS? (sorry, found a list of features following the link).
And if I got it right, there's a new version of flasher supplied with it where you don't have to disable the card? I don't have Optimus, just the dedicated card so disabling the card sounds like a potential black screen to me.

A dumb side-question, but would a Maxwell card on a non-G-Sync laptop still work with a G-Sync external screen via DP connection?

He has an AW17, so only 1 GPU for him.

Make sure in NCP that your global power management settings are "adaptive" and that your card is clocking down correctly.

No black screen when you disable the GPU. Windows WDDM takes over and keeps working. However, that isn't needed with the new nvflash Prema bundled with it, it does it for you now.

I can't answer the DP question with certainty because I have never used it and I've heard conflicting info.

It should work since there is a direct connection to the GPU. I actually plan to test this myself next week, provided MicroCenter still has the 24 inch Acer Gsync monitor on sale.

My temps went up with 361.75 as well but so did the performance. I just tried Watch Dogs and its 60+ FPS on Ultra with the 2715x1527 DSR... The issue, however, is that the temps were 80s with max fans... And then of course the obligatory Watch Dogs black screen crash that required me to power off and turn the computer back on......
