Anyone try it out yet? I've been hearing great things about it on other forums. I have the game downloaded, but I got an exam tomorrow so I'm trying not to play it until tomorrow.

Got a link for us?

I just the demo of in the mail with my PCGAMER magazine. I think i'll check it out in a bit.
-
I watch video about it.
It look awesome butsome how strange.
I know it scifi but somehow it dont catch my eyes. I will check it after I have my new laptop.
I till prefer FPS like Max Payne, FEAR, HL2 (maybe i like to shoot people more than shoot monster). But it very stress release for me. -
Anyway, as I was saying I prefer games with oponents being humans (or at least humanoids), somehow it makes the game more exciting. But I don't know why game developers refuse to implement 'body fragmentation' mechanisms in their games. I mean, ragdoll is cool, but the ability to shoot off someone's head or arm or leg (or all of them) is so much better. We all remember and love classic game Soldier of Fortune and its second part Soldier of Fortune 2. All those wonderful games like Far Cry, F.E.A.R. etc would benefit a lot from that ability...
OK, I went a little off topic, so now few words about Prey. I only saw the E3 demo and yeah, it looks good, plot seems to be interesting (at least at this stage) with all those deamons and indians and aliens (they should add some pirates too) but again they should add some more human-like opponents. And one more thing, maybe it's just me but I personally prefer dark games, so all those lightnings and colorful lights all over the place just doesn't get to me...
Nevertheless, I look forward to get my new laptop and try it.
Greetings -
Ok, I guess I'm the only one here to have played through it yet, so here's a mini-review.
For one, the graphics are pretty impressive, especially at 1440x900 with 4xAF/2xAA and everything at maximum. And to maintain a fluid framerate at those settings, the team over at 3D Realms must have done a lot of optimizations to the code even at this stage in the game. That said, the OpenGL 2.0-based Doom 3 engine is showing a little age next to newer, SM3-enhanced ones like the Lithtech Jupiter EX (a la F.E.A.R. and Condemned), CryTek (FarCry and Chaos Theory), and Source HDR (HL2: Lost Coast and Episode 1). It doesn't have support for Soft Shadows or High Dynamic Range lighting, effects starting to take hold as staples in modern games that leave Prey looking "simple" next to F.E.A.R. and Episode 1.
Sounds are what you'd expect - plus a lot more of your character talking/cursing to himself, very believable given the circumstances and a nice touch, if certainly not G-rated dialogue.
But on to the important part - gameplay. I'm on the fence here - the kind of ethereal "Spirit walk" ability seems to be useful only in scripted places so far, although I think it could factor in more heavily in the full game (still, I'm not seeing something as truly versatile as F.E.A.R.'s SlowMo). The weapons in the demo are fairly straightforward (wrench, alien machine gun, bigger alien machine gun) except for some nifty bugs that crawl towards your target and a explode - although a familiar concept for those of use who've played Half-Life (so, everybody with a PC). The mechanic of "you never really die" is certainly a nice bonus, although I'd think it'd make the game a walk in the park - the demo certainly was. The portals around the ship(?) and some weird tricks with perspective shake things up a bit, but for the most part the non-scripted gameplay is pretty much your standard run-and-gun shooter, although it's nice to have that little bird distract your enemies. I'm not sure if this'll amount to being substantially better than F.E.A.R.'s engaging but ultimately repetitive gameplay, but it'll need to be to score a hit since Prey's already behind graphically.
The only major complaint I have so far is the excruciating amount of loading. Loading screens are more prevalent than in any game I've played since Half-Life 1, and they're tortuously long - longer than F.E.A.R., Quake IV, or Half-Life 2 by a sizable margin, rivaling those notorious load times found in Battlefield 2.
Still, it's worth your 450MB of bandwidth - if you have a dedicated nVidia graphics card to make the most out of it. -
I downloaded the demo and played a little bit! well i got to get reolution to 640x480 but everithyng on high and i get aroun of 25-35 fps wich is not that bad!

Uggg, my PCGAMER CD came with a trailer, not the demo >_<
-
It was interesting, good for a demo but not good enough to me to warrant a purchase.
Looked pretty nice too, ran it at 1440X900 with 16XAF all maxed out, seemed to be running at 60FPS to boot as well (Didn't get a chance to benchmark)
But for the great engine that is the Doom 3 engine (Doom III ran on low-medium at 30fps on my FX5200!) I didn't expect too much less. -
Does anybody know if it'll run on my system? (17" Macbook Pro)
-
Certainly, if you have Windows via Boot Camp you should be able to play it at pretty high settings. Not sure if Parallels will handle it quite so well, but it would run.
-
Interesting! Physics engine is pretty FUBAR but it was obviously the way they wanted it and it was COOL.
Personally, its nice to see a native american in a video game, seeing as how I'm half Sioux. -
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
it runs surprisingly well on my x1300, though its at 800x600, but I can do that wilh detail settings cranked, doom 3 ran like crap with everything tanked, so they did a good job tweaking out the engine, if I up the res and lower the detail settings, it chugs a good bit, though I didnt expect it run at all
-
cool! I'll have to try it out on bootcamp next week once I get my MBP

I was at BB the other day and my friend mentioned this game to me; I had never heard of it. I looked at the box and wasnt impressed. When I came home I looked at it more and dl'ed the demo. All I can say is WOW, what a great game. I think it is using the new Quake 4 engine. It looks and feels like Doom 3 a lot but has a much different story. The demo is great and has amamzing cinematics. It is def worth checking out. Im sure many of you have and it is old news, but for those of you who havent played, give it a try.

BTW this game looks BEAUTIFUL on a E1705, I was able to have everything turned up to the max, Im sure anyone with a x1600 or 7600 up will be very pleased.
Let me know what you guys think. -
We had a couple of threads on this a little while ago. This will probably be merged with those,
-
Sry, I looked a couple pages back and saw nothing. I just wanted to let people know and what they thought. Mods should delete this then.

This game is pretty good. It looks nice. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the style or the storyline. It's just a little too out there for me, and I like sci fi. But at least it looks nice. I still prefer F.E.A.R.
