So yeah this game is on sale at steam, is it worth getting? Or should I not waste my bandwidth on it? Plus, it is only $4.95, so you can't go wrong...

Yes,it`s a nice game. Comparable to Quake 4 in some places, although a tad more disgusting
I`ve finished it,took a very long time,but well enjoyable. -
That's a nice price. If you like FPS, it's a solid title, using the U3 engine so it's similar to Doom 3, but not as scary (if Doom 3 was scary). The portals are a nice change but not as fleshed out as they could have been. Good length and some humor thrown in to boot. And the graphics hold up well for a ~2 year old game. I'd go for it if i didn't already own it.

One of the best games I've played in 2007. It's really interesting all the way through and it has a pretty involved plot.
-
Better than average FPS for $5? SOLD.
-
Yeah, I just got the steam update. It looks enticing to get.
-
just got a credit card...done
-
I`m going to go Steam from now one. Not worrying about the disk is awesome.Plus, check out the prices...no shipping.schweet
-
Er...it used a [heavily modified] Doom3 engine. That's why it looks like Doom3.
The Unreal 3 engine wasn't quite out (first game it was in was Gears of War) when Prey was released.
EDIT: Doom3 Engine = IdTech4 engine
Played the demo, neat idea. REALLY gross game. -
It is gross. There are some freaky lookin` centaur that come out of holes in the walls that look like...well...
VaginasDisgusting ones too
-
Lol, now that I think about it, you are sort of right. I guess birth is just done in a universal way, be it through spaceship bulkhead of human female (Human Females are awesome). -
Ok, I swallowed my pride (and snappy comeback to myself) and bought the game.

just purchased my copy and waiting for it to finish downloading, the overall reviews look good
-
It is an excellent game.
This is first game I ever beat on the 360 and I enjoyed every minute of it. Kind of short, I beat it in about 3-4 days when I was off from school, but worth every penny of $5
Even tho I've already beat it, I'm going to buy it again off of steam for the PC.
Definitely recommend -

do you have to play this game thought steam?
or is it an iso file or exe or what?
thanks
John. -
It is similar to iTunes for games.
So you start Steam and then you start your game from within Steam.
The game is saved as a bunch of cab files that are unpacked after download.
You have to play the game through Steam if you buy it on Steam, but if you dislike that idea, you can always purchase the boxed version, considering it is about 5 bucks as well. -
-
Great game for a great price!
-
*does robot dance*
Thanks for the save, I ALWAYS make that mistake when I go to the steam site.
-
Just saw it, and it's boughteted.
Never played it, and for 5 bucks I can't pass it up -
Just played a few levels, my verdict: meh.
Average FPS, levels WAY too short, poor graphics (though excused since it is a 2 year old game, and I do know the graphics were very good when it was released). -
What is multiplayer like? are the servers empty?

For anyone interested, IGN gave Prey a 9.0/10. I think I'd probably agree with them, like I said, it's one of the best games I've played in the past few years and when I think of a unique and memorable game, there's a few games that'll actually be unique and memorable, and, for me, this was one of them.
http://pc.ign.com/articles/717/717800p1.html
There's also a demo out if you want to try the first two levels:

Yea I was thinking of getting it anyways, since I spend my money on worst games that costs much more than 5 bucks, actually $4.95... O and about Geometry Wars, I have it for DS so I dunno if want to get it on pc. Yea I look forward to future Steam crazy weekends sales.
-
In UK the game is currently on those 3 for £10 offers at GAME, which works out at approx. $4.50-5.00 per game.
-
Yer i bought this game for a 3 for £10 offer , Ive never even botherd to get past the first level , once you leave the bar and enter the
"space ship" type thing and then you see your friend die , thats as far as i ever botherd to get lol...
Its a decent game from what ive seen , Graphics arnt that bad.. -
Graphics are much better than Quake 4 and Doom 3, because it`s a heavily modified Doom3 engine, and it`s still being used for benchmarks today.
It`s gross,but it`s an awesome fps. -

I actually think it's a pretty beautiful game with some wicked art direction, but it has two serious flaws in my opinion, one of which is fatal.
The less grievous one is the mediocre weapon selection. Understanding what they were going for with the weapons doesn't stop them from being just too unusual and unwieldy. Sometimes creativity is awesome, and sometimes a sawed off shotgun was right the first time.
The fatal one that ruined the game for me was the fact that after you get your spirit form, it's impossible to lose the game. It's everything people complained about the Vita-Chambers in BioShock for times infinity. When you die, you play a minigame to get extra health, then promptly respawn exactly where you were with the same weapons and ammo. Great. If you can get up from your computer in the middle of a firefight and come back two hours later to finish that firefight, there's really no drawback to dying. I got sloppy once I figured that out, because I realized there was literally no reason to be careful.
All that said, for five bucks it's worth at least buying to get a good look at, because a lot of the ideas in it are pretty outstanding. But there's a reason there are stacks and stacks of it selling for ten bucks at the local Fry's. -
The key to Prey was weapon experimentation. I would replay a difficult area to get the feel of what works or not.
As far as game saves, I prefer standard save and quit. A realistic game save would be that you pay your money, you die, end of game. Picture the faces with "game deleted" flashing on the screens? Game saves "at points" drives me nuts if the phone rings or house catches fire between last save point. -
Good reviews, low price, don't have to drive to the store or wait for it to ship to me. Easy deal for me.
I have it downloading right now. -

A friend of mine bought this game when it first came out on the Xbox 360 and he didn't really like so I never gave it much thought. But for $5 I just downloaded it and I actually really enjoy it. The graphics aren't the greatest but they are definitely clean, the shooting is solid, and the walking on the ceiling/walls is awesome. Without growing bored or tired I just played it for a solid hour (then hunger took over). I would say this game would be a good buy at $20 and considering it is on sale for 1/4 that I would recommend it to anyone who likes FPS or is bored with their other games.
And if Steam continues these weekend sales I will buy a new game every week. -
Can someone check how many servers are currently running and how many players?
-
question....it has been stuck at 86% all day...it says it cannot connect to the steam servers...it was going at 600KBPS before this and it just stopped....anyone have an idea?
-
For $5 well worth it if you even remotely like FPS games. I thought it was fun, not too difficult, and at least tried to set itself apart by trying some new things. Not a perfect 10 by any means, but I spent $40 on it and thought it was worth the cash.
-
1. Pause the download, wait a few seconds, resume download.
2. Turn off steam, wait 30 seconds, turn on steam.
3. Double click on the game, let it display the "game will begin in xx:xx hours. See if that starts the update again.
4. There is some cache file you can delete that might help, but I don't know which, find more info on steampowered.com forums.
Good lucks. -
-
just purchased it
-
wow this game is aweful, i mean aweful. Its worth the 5 bucks though, i mean if you dont pirate that is, but steam isnt known for their compatibility ( as 12 of our cod4 clan members are in the dog house becasue of a steam error and PB). worth the $$ for 5 bones, but the game is horrible, this is a first person shooter that isnt that much of a shooter and the shooting isnt good. Doom3 , quake 4 are MUCH better. I would say this is on target with games such as Call of Juarez, pretty crappy.
7.5 @ gamespot, not very goo IMO.

It got 83 on metacritics:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/prey?q=prey
It got pretty good reviews when it got out, so that's an awesome deal for 4.95$ IMO -

Mark it sold! Downloading now, thanks for the heads up.
*edit*
DL servers must be getting hammered pretty hard. Made it to 56% and now it's just a trickle at 22k -
I like the game so far.
Has some gnarly classic rock and some Art Bell. -
Lots of alien life.
