    Hi,

I've recently purchased a i9300 with GeForce 6800 go, and 1 gb RAM. When I run CS:S, I would get into about 10 minutes into the game, then I would freeze. I could hear everything in the background, but everything would freeze... eventually I get disconnected for lagging out. My fps is a little over 40, and I notice that everytime before I get disconnected the "choke" seems to go up to around 30.

I'm wondering if my problem has anything to do with creating two partitions on my laptop. I've followed SouthernGirl's step by step guide of reformating the laptop. I have 25 gb (C drive) for windows/programs/games and 35 gb (D drive) still unused. I have about 12 gb left in the C drive. Should I put games in the other drive?

I've tried re-installing the display drivers from Dell's website, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem.

Please, any help would be appreciated.

Hello. I have almost the same exact setup. These are some things I want you to try. First of all, if I'm understand this correctly, is that your running the game from an external hard drive. If you are I would suggest try reinstalling the game into your actual laptop main hard drive. Sometimes, even though most external hard drives are usb 2.0 and fast it can cause delays and problems during gameplay. Next do you have the most current drivers installed? Another thing you can try is going to Options in CS:S and then try changing the screen ration to 16:10 and then select 1440 x 900 which im sure your laptop's native resolution is.
    Hope this helps. ;)

Greetings. I don't think it's the partitions that you are having problems with.

Are you on a wired or wireless internet connection?

Thank you both for your responses. I did a little more research and I noticed some error messages using the console function. Before I get into that, to clarify things a little more, I do not have a external hard drive and I am using a wireless internet connection.

I might've messed up my installation in the first place when I tried to drag the installed files into the other drive, but eventually I dragged them all back into the C drive.

The specific error I'm getting when I run the console feature, I get something like this:

    "--- Missing Vgui material vgui/steam/games/icon_hl2mp
    --- Missing Vgui material vgui/servers/icon_secure_deny"

When I try to get into a server, I get a warning message in my console that says:

"Warning: using WorldTwoTextureBlend on a non-displacement surface (material: de_dust/groundsand_blend). Support for this will go away soon"

My "choke" rate would go up to about 50-60 causing me to lag and eventually "Dissconnect... Timed out." The funny thing is that when I create my own server and play with bots, everything runs fine.

Again, any help would be appreciated.

I would try un-installing the game, and then steam. Go to steampowered.com and download steam there. Then log-in to steam and it will download your game. If it doesnt, insert your CD/DVD and install it that way.

Wireless connection. Wireless Connection. WIRELESS CONNECTION~!!!

Check your wireless connection and your adapter settings. Make sure you have a stable, strong enough signal before you start playing games wirelessly.

I can play games wirelessly, like CS 1.6, and everything is fine. If your choke is going up like nuts, make sure your wireless is secure first.

Then set your "rate" to "20000 or 25000", then set your "cl_updaterate 101", "cl_cmdrate 101".

All should be well after this. If not then do not play wirelessly and hardwire your laptop into your router/internet connection.

    Cheers,
    Mike

The only thing I can add is that you may have a problem with your GPU. Mine was defective and would crash out in CS:S all the time. It got replaced and the problem went away. I also have a 6800-series.

Thank you all for the responses. I actually did try tweaking the settings and hardwiring my laptop to the router, nothing has changed and I still would crash out because of choking or just lagging out.

I'm about to conclude that I may have a defective GPU as Dragon Myr stated. Thank you all for your support, I really appreciated.

Whoa whoa whoa, you don't get choke from your graphics card. Choke has to do with your network connection, so please double check your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and make sure it's not your connection before thinking it's your graphics card as I'm SURE it's not your card.

Try a different online game and see if it's your connection. Also check out www.dslreports.com and www.toast.net and do some checks on your internet connection.

    Cheers,
    Mike

it's definitlvy not the internet connection, you still hear background noise and gun effects, it really sounds like your GPU locks up! have you tried installing another driver? maybe the one that your oem is supplying?
if nothing helps you have a defective cpu! but before you return your device, make sure you have double tested that it's defecive buy running another GPU killer game like Quake4 or FEAR!

    Hi everyone, just a update.

I downloaded spybot and ad-aware... surprisingly, the game seems to be working after removing them. I have not thought of spyware or adware problems because I thought I wouldn't have any considering its a new computer. However, gameplay still seems a little laggy.

I haven't told you guys that this is my second purchase of the same computer. I returned the first one because I had some display problems while idling, and Dell offered $750 coupons the week after my purchase, so I thought I'd save a little returning it and re-ordering it. I actually recalled that graphics ran much smoothly on the first purchase, so yes I'm kind of regretting it.

I also ran the Dell diagnostic test on my laptop to see if there were any problems. According to the test, everything seems to be working properly. Do you guys still think I should have it replaced? Are these diagnostic tests accurate?

Thank you all for your support

The Dell diagnostics are total BS. Sit down with your machine and make it run the Direct 3d graphics test a dozen times or so and if the GPU is defective it should crash out. Mine did a reboot to a white screen on the 7th run of the 3d test. That's when Dell finally agreed to replace it after giving me such useless BS like "the servers are crashing" among other rediculous claims.

I ran direct3d test. Everything seems to be fine. I guess removing spyware solved my problems.

To be fully assured, I might just have to get another game. I'm hearing great things about FEAR. Judging from my specs, will I run that game smoothly? I have 1.73 ghz processor and that just meets the minimum requirements right?

    Thanks again

Actually, the 1.73GHz processor is above the requirements by a good amount. It requires a Pentium 4 2.0GHz I believe, and your 1.73 is equivalent to a 3.2GHz Pentium 4. :)

As long as you have 1GB of RAM or more, the game should play very smoothly, especially on the Go6800.
