Hey there and thanks for checking the thread to see if you can help.

I've got an xps m1530 that i got maybe a year ago or a little more frm today. Around the time when i frst got it, i bought call of duty 4 and it played on a res of 1280x900 on high settings perfectly. NO LAG. those were the optimal settings chosen by the game. I unisntalled it sometime later and reinstalled it a few weeks ago to play again. However, for some reason, now the optimal settings are only lyk 800x600 and it says that my hardware has changed (even though it hasn't). It also plays with a lot of lag, on both 800x600 and 1280x900.

At first i thought it was the fact that my xps tends to overheat, but my recent cooler has taken care of tht problem, and the cod4 problem is still there.

I even updated my vid card driver... didn't help. Also, on a side note, F.E.A.R which used to run at lyk a constant 40 - 60fps now runs at lyk 17fps!!?! I'm just so confused and have no ida what's going on. Is it possible that my vid card has somehow weakend over the months or sumthing? Any ideas are appreciated. Here's my specs:

    2.4 duo core processor
    4gbs ram
lots of space on C drive
    nvidia geforce 8600m gt

    cheers guys

Just ignore the 'optimal settings' dialogue that comes up every time and set it whatever way you want manually. I run COD4 on 1440x900 med/high settings for single-player, but 1440x900 low/med settings (no shadows, no spec-map) for multiplayer. Make sure you don't have AA enabled, because with a 8600M, you don't really want that performance hit.

Also make sure you have the laptop power settings to 'high-performance' instead of 'balanced'. You can do this on the battery icon in the taskbar.
