for the past week, i've been playing quake 4 for hours at a time, ultra-high settings with antialiasing on 2x on my z81sp. Last night i was in a very heavy firefight, grenades bouncing all over the place, smoke everywhere my squadmate was blazing away, and then everything freezes. About 30 seconds later a blue screen came up and gave me error nv4-disp.

It also said that the device drivers were stuck in an infinite loop and that I had to dl new drivers or send it back for repair.

This morning, i turned on my computer and went into quake 4. Started a new game to show my roommate the awesome graphics. The only problem was that after an unusually long load time, when the game started, the framerate was terrible and all of the settings where turned down all the way, when i pressed escape during the cut scene, the game froze up and i had to ctrl alt delete my way out and end the program. I went into half-life 2 to see if that games setting had been turned down and everything was fine. Went back into quake 4, turned all of the settings up, started new game, everything was fine again, loaded up nice and quick, graphics where awesome.

I'm not on my laptop right now and haven't had time to dl new drivers, so i was just wondering if anybody knows if this sounds like a driver problem or something that i'm gonna have to get repaired. It only happened for q4, so i'm assuming that it's a driver prob, but i'm no expert and was wondering what u guys thought.

Also, I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the best drivers for a Go 6800mxm are and where i could find them.
Should i use the official nvidia drivers, or are 3rd party drivers better??

That is an interesting problem, but not unheard of. It definitely is a driver issue.
I had this issue on the Nvidia machine I was using - some games, I could play perfectly, but others were incredibly choppy. A restart usually fixed that. Then it just refused to run games at all. Turns out there was something wrong with the drivers.

I downloaded the 84.20's from www.laptopvideo2go.com, and it has been fine ever since. The latest are 84.21.

The third-party drivers usually have a bunch of little tweaks in them to help performance. Give them a go. ;)

performance is inline with the previous official whql released 81.xx whatever it was.

    I say go for it, they'rrrrrrre grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat~!

    hmmm tony the tiger goodness

as previously stated, it is most likely a driver issue.

also, there is no one set of "best" drivers..every set of drivers will work differently for everyone who uses them..personally i see nothing wrong with the Nvidia drivers, or use a modded set from someone reputable (omega)

    hope this helps,

    pb,out.
