Hello I have a Dell e1705 (See Sig for Specs) and am having some problems with CS:S. I have been playing it since I got my computer (with absolutely no problems) and have been getting 90-100 FPS on average (full settings). The other day I went to play and I was only getting 19 FPS, and I was stunned. I restarted the computer and I now get around 70 FPS. But here is the problem: The game is jerky (I don't think it is lag because my ping is in the 40 and so is everyone elses). For instance I'll take a 30 FPS for a second and then it jumps back up. There is nothing running in the background that I think could be causing this. My last upgrade was going from 1 GB of RAM to 2 GB. I am gonna run 3dmark today (once I get out of work) to see if I get in the same range of scores. Anything else you guys suggest?

theres been a lot of hackers on valve lately. although i doubt thats the problem and it might be a driver or virus issue.
first though, does this happen in any other games? -
I've been having weird lagging problems even on LAN servers recently. I sincerely doubt it's my setup (see signature), so I imagine it's once again a problem on Valve's end. I have noticed that decreasing sound quality and setup-type (e.g. 5.1 down to stereo) helps a bit, so I'm getting an Audigy 4 soon and we'll see if that helps. They might have screwed up the sound code in a patch.

Whenever there is a problem you assume it's valve first...
Anyway, I used to have the same problem I would suggest checking other online games first to see if it's a general problem or a steam/CS:S/Valve problem.
I've had router issues cause this and general clutter. They have a list of used ports somewhere on the steam site but I always say try a virus scan, spyware scan, disk cleanup/defrag before going crazy trying to fix the problem. -
Well now that you guys mention it the problems did start happening after steam got finished updating something.
-
Ok, Steam has a "fixall" kind of solution which I've used for a while. Somewhere in the mess that is your steam folder there is a file called ClientRegistry.blob, find it and delete it. Deleting it forces steam to update and that will fix a lot of problems on it's own without worrying about hardware.
On my computer it's in C:\Program Files\Steam -
****it, I started up Battlefield 2 and it played like crap too. Usually I get 60 FPS, full settings and it got like 15 and was acting all crazy (Like middle part of the screen was popping up on the bottom and then going back to the middle)

I have noticed problems since Steam last updated as well.
Used to get between 90-100 FPS. Now I'm around 60-75 no matter what time of day or what I do. -
see if your virus scan is scanning at the times of you playing your games...ive noticed that mine has done this alot ( i dont notice it much on my desktop with my opteron, but on my laptop i can tell a difference)..
-
So...Check router/firmware, disable automatic scan times for virus scanner, see if opening ports works, call ISP to see if it's a reported problem in the area or your modem... I'd say check to see if you are overheating, also, unless the problems occur right away. My laptop tends to start acting funny after 10-15 minutes of playtime because it gets very hot.
I dunno, there are so many potential things which can cause this I get lost. -
None of these things are happening to me when I play CSS.
It is the recent update to Steam -- I'm almost 100% sure the problem of lower FPS stems from it. -
No, this isn't a connection issue. It happens in Battlefield 2 as well. If I start the computer up and start playing it acts fine. If I let the computer sit for an hour or two it starts acting up (without gaming).

well...i dont speak for all of us..but have you tried anything we suggested?
if so....did anything help?
