hey guys, ive been having this problem for quite awhile now, its starting to me off, so i tot i'll ask for help here.

i hav this recently bought hp dv5 with a 9600gt. its a good card that runs games pretty well, but it hangs mid game.

    lemme give an example:
when i playteam fortress 2, the game will jam after about 20 mins. i'll hav to ctrl-alt-det to exit the jammed game interface and re-enter the game interface. it'll be fine sometimes, but at others it will be incredibly laggy, lik 5 frames per sec. this sucks. and it happens to COD5 too. sometimes its so laggy i feel lik smashing the screen.

so what can i do? is it a problem wif my graphics card? i'm not very sure how to change my video drivers, and the last time i did, the problem did not go away.

I want to change the comp, but i dunno how to tell hp the problem. the comp is perfectly fine when games are not being play. help is NEEDED!
    thks guys

well if your machine runs fine when not playing games, then there's something going on about the GPU, try uninstalling every driver for GPU you have because sometimes if you install tings wrong two versions of driver can mess you everything, so try uninstalling every GPU driver and the use then the newest driver from your GPU card's manufacturer official site - 80 % odds it will help, if not then maybe you have wrong settings in your GPU's control panel - like NVidia control panel - http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_6.html this site has a guide for NVidia cards and this one has guide for ATI cards http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html
you might even start right from those guides provided in the links because there might have been a problem resolved by its writer that resembles same symptoms as yours

    Good Luck !

First off, you should download a replacement driver. I recommend using Nvidia's official driver. Save it to your desktop.

To uninstall: Start Menu -> right-click on Computer -> choose Properties -> click Device Manager -> double-click Display Adapters -> right-click 9600M GT -> choose Uninstall -> Restart computer.

Once you're back in Windows, just double click the new driver to begin installation.

Your installed driver/drivers should me visible in your programs menu ( its in the control panel ) and selecting them from the list of software items you have installed on your machine. I think the Programs menu is named Add and Delete Programs in Win XP and Programs and Functions in Win Vista, but I'm sure you know what menu I was talking about

As for the guide it is lengthy, but has a lot of tips of how to not only fix your problems, but make your video card more efficient without any overclicking

Is the dv5 very hot when you're playing games? Does the system feel too warm to touch? Is the fan on max speed?

I think the others here are right: it probably has to do with your GPU driver/configurations.

    But...
It could also be an overheat problem causing the GPU to downclock, but you would need a temperature monitor to know if the temps are above normal when playing games.
A good temperature monitor is hwmonitor found at http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

ahh, i reinstalled the drivers but the problem still persists the screen still jams and i hav to exit the game. damn...
is it possible that there is a problem wif the GPU itself?

Advises a complete reformat of the system to see if your problem is down to the Operating System making a mess of things.

Check the temps before reformatting as suggested in the quoted post.

Couldn't it be just a corrupted game...? By the way, I have the same GPU and runs like a charm with COD4, GTA4 and many more. I'm using DOX's 181.22.

I would just try to reinstall vista then.

I have the same laptop. It runs fine on TF2 and other games. Just a bit laggy cause of me being far away from the router and comcast's reliability. :(

Remember that some games just don't like certain GPU's for no reason
As often game designers state in system requirements window - mobile versions of GPU's that are supported can work, BUT ARE NOT OFFICIALY SUPPORTED

But I think that even a stubborn GPU can be forced to work well with any game ( assuming it has enough power, witch 9600 GT surely has)
