Razer announced a new gaming device, codenamed "fiona"
Project Fiona | Razer | For Gamers. By Gamers.
what are your guys' thoughts on this? personally, i think its a neat idea. and i want something like it, however, if those joysticks on the side are always on, its a turn off for me. the nice thing about tablets is thier versitility, and if it ONLY works as a gaming system (or at least has those ugly handles on it) its not gonna be purchased by me. if they are removable, its a must buy imo.
-
I guess the 3k priced awfully configured razer blade is bailing out
-
I read that Fiona is supposed to be a windows 8 full on tablet, so it should perform well, hopefully the handles are removable
-
Reminds me of a very expensive tea tray. Other than that, it would be great for Tablet Gamers. I just don't see myself ever using one.
-
looks weird and uncomfortable to use, like holding up 2 wii remotes.
-
RSI here we go!
-
price and specs first, the other things we can live with.
-
RSI is pretty serious and not a very nice thing to "live with"
-

Baka is interested in this one as much as Baka is interested in the Switchblade ._. Baka is wondering about the specs and price. Baka thinks it should be okay if it's capable of running space marine smoothly. Battery life is of Baka's concern though too
-
1k bucks, a little bit expensive, but an i7 within a tablet, you kidding me??!! -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
tablet batteries are on the order of 25 watt hours.
you'll get about an hour of battery life on an ULV i7, but they could use a lower voltage future model, or possibly have a much larger battery? -
Baka thinks it should be able to last 4-5 hours if it's not being used for heavy gaming i.e plain web surfing and stuff. But if it's being used for gaming, it may have 2 hours at best ._.
Baka does wish that the side controller key thingys are detachable or can be rotated to be speakers... It doesn't look right like that :x -
but if it is for gaming on the go, it should last more than at least 2 hours..
-
Call me crazy, but I wouldn't whip one of these out on a plane trip or while I am sitting at a starbucks. I don't know who this device is aimed at.
Don't get me wrong, it doesn't look terrible and I am sure it has its uses, but what will it have to offer over a portable handheld other than "You can check your email on it"? -
Baka thinks that tinytop69 needs to name a portable handheld that could play a "proper PC game" like space marine in the frame rates that he shows in the demo ._.
-
The games specifically aren't really the issue, but rather, practicality of the device itself. -
For gamers by gamers? I am beginning to wonder if they know anything about gamers at all, this makes me think of those people in suits who make changes in a job they have never worked in.
The people on this forum could come up with something better than all of the nonsense they have shown so far. -
What I got out of it was i7 mobile, possibly a low power dual core (like 25W i7-2629m or 17W i7-2617m), and $1000 end of 2012 with Windows 8. I actually like this a lot better than the Blade. But the cost is still quite high for an "accessory" device as they said its intention was. It would be nice to make the controllers detachable though.
No word on screen resolution, storage space (or type of storage mPCIe SSD?), or battery life.
I'm assuming it's using the IGP. To be honest I think they would have been better off with an AMD chip with the IGP, especially if the screen is only like 1024x600 or something like that. AMD's chips are suited for stuff like this. Heck I can even play BF3 at 1024x768 with my Llano IGP. AMD Trinity would be the perfect fit for it. In any case, HD 4000 looks to be a decent GPU though. But if it's a ULV i7 then not sure if it has the same GPU in the other regular mobile chips.
As thick as it is I'm assuming a decent sized battery is fitted in there too.

now that looks very pointless.
How much are these things? -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
it sort of looks like the boba fett ship from star wars. i don't think anyone will buy one of these. seriously, would you get this, or just a normal tablet like an iPad or android?
I think people who really want to game on the go on a tablet, will get a tablet. People who want to play desktop-class PC games on the go will get a laptop. This thing just looks awkward and silly and has a problematic shape. How would you pack it, for example, if you were to take it with you? Tablet gaming and mobile apps have taken off. This one-foot-in-both camps thing doesn't make much sense. -
Another sort of s0ny invention, Shortlived and not gonna be popular.
I will be surprised if I ever saw anyone playing on one of these out and about. -
And I thought the Blade was bad.

The design is ridiculous. At first, I just thought "meh, not for me". But the more I think about it, I'm starting to wonder if this is a joke.

Razer announced that it will be under 1,000$ USD in the youtube comments so I think it will sell well compared to that ridiculously overpriced laptop they have.
-
Even so, $1000? It's most likely a low power i7 dual core mobile chip (like in M11x). Most likely using the Intel HD 4000, so no dedicated GPU even, probably 4GB RAM, 60GB SSD, 10.1" 1280x800 capacitive screen.
I think $700 would be a fair price. We'll just have to wait and see. To be honest I actually like it. More useful than a traditional tablet at least. With those handle controllers it'd be perfect for driving games using the gyro. -
Kill. It. With. FIRE!
Razor, why must you make worthless overpriced gadgets that no-one will buy?
Make the switchblade already -
I think its actually pretty great, does the job of both a laptop and a tablet. I current have a Dell XPS 15 and a Asus Transformer and I carry both around with me. That single tablet could "technically" do the job of both while staying in the size of a tablet. And while $1000 sounds alot, my transformer was $400+tax and the Dell was $1100+tax.
If its done right the first time, I can see it being successful. I already picture myself playing on one of those things. It being a Razer product, comparing it to my Black Widow Ultimate, the build quality should be really good too. -
Not going to buy it.
-
...but does it run Angry Birds?
-
-
Of course it can, my C-50 tablet plays the Windows version of Angry Birds fluidly. I was going for a tablet-ized version of the old "can it run Crysis" meme.
-
I can understand if the game controls were detachable. But it seems like it's a part of the unit. Good luck not having that thing snag in a case or sleeve!

Also considering its size, the gpu would be a bottleneck and yes, HEAT issue.. unless they got some really nice cooling fans or whatever they used.

I don't want to sound like a downer but this is going to flop. Mobile gaming (Phone gaming specifically) is a casual experience...I don't know a single person who is a hardcore phone gamer, just saying "Hardcore phone gamer" sounds absolutely ridiculous. That said, even if this were to for some crazy reason take off it will be so over priced it wont be worth it. So I'm a little pessimistic on this
-
Baka thinks that saying "mobile gaming is casual experience" is a narrow minded way of thinking. If one does not try to revolutionize, then Baka thinks we won't have things we have today.

How do u aim, strafe and shoot at the same time with this controller?
Actually how do u do this with any controller? dont u need 1 thumb for aiming and 1 for walking and 8 fingers to hold the control? -
also Baka is right (as always) new tech / innovation is what brought the toys we have today, we should always encourage people thinking of new devices, EVEN THOUGH we don't like them..
-
ohh yeah forgot controllers have buttons on the back as well
-
It's no different than your typical game controller. I hate game controllers though with a passion. Whoever thought controlling games with your thumb was a good idea needs to be shot, and go back in time and shoot them so we'd have something better.

Watch more movies people.... -
Thumbs are the least dextrous digit. That's why it's used to tap a spacebar six times larger than regular keys. -

Wrong!
