I know this isn't the steam support forums but for Christmas I was gonna set up my brother an account and buy him some games from Steam. I made the account no problem and then whenever I purchase some games my debit card is declined. I checked the bank account it is tied to and there is more than $1600 in it. I then tried paypal which also is tied to a bank account and it fails also....
Anyone else having trouble buying from steam? This has never happened before and I have been making purchases through steam for more than 2 years....

Is possible to use a visa? Visa transaction almost always go through (if the credit is available) other wise it sounds like an issue with your bank and you may have to reach them on the next available business day as it is Christmas.

It could possibly be an issue with steam. Have you tried using another credit card? Sometime as well if you don't enter things exactly transactions don't go through.

They should have given you a reason to why they declined.
Are you sure the game you purchased isnt region locked? -

I'm in the US and purchasing for an account in the US and as far as I can tell the games (Borderlands, FC2, Plants vs. Zombies, & Torchlight) are for my region. The reason stated in the e-mail was that my credit card purchase was declined by my credit card company (I have money in my account, I am the cardholder, I used it as recently as 6hrs ago, last time I used it on steam was for L4D2).
Thanks for the replies, nobody else seems to have had an issue here, guess its time to troll on over to steam's forum and then shoot some e-mails because some of the deals will be over today and I would like to save the $50 or so if it completes today... -
Two possibilities for this.
1) Your bank has placed a hold on your card as it may have misidentified your purchase as a fraudulent purchase.
2) Steam has placed a hold on your account as it may have misidentified your purchase as a fraudulent purchase.
If it's 2, Steam won't get around in time to do anything about it.
If it's 1, call the bank up and have them do something about it immediately.
I would suggest you buy the games as a gift on your own steam account, and then gift them to your brother via email. -
double check the details youve entered and make sure the steam billing address is exactly the same as your cc

This happened to a friend with his debit card. And then the next day, everything was fine.
Hope it works out! And Merry Christmas! -

As I am still awake I thought I would try again and it worked... Still not sure what was wrong as I tried both debit (multiple times checking accuracy) and paypal (straight from my bank account).
