I read this review on Anandtech, the results look really impressive!!! Is it possible for go 7900gs or other models to handle H.264 decoding completely? Or is it really hardware dependent? I read somewhere that a driver is all thats needed, is this true?

No, only 8x00M series has Purevideo HD currently in laptops. Also ATI has probably similar in their HD 2600 series.

Well, if they don't it'll really be a disgrace (Radeon 2600 HD)

Nvidia 7x00 GPUs have only Purevideo that can assist CPU on HD decoding, when only 8x00 (exl. 8800) have advanced Purevideo HD that can take all load off from CPU with 1080p h264.

It's only PureVideo.I'm pretty much sure there are no HD's in there.

    HD : High definition.
In this case it means that it's better suited to decode high definition movies

Other one is more efective, lot more efective. With current laptops you can't decode 1080p h264 flawlessly with ~2.33GHz CPU and Go 7x00 GPU.

My computer decoded 1080p h.264 just fine, peak at 35mbps and avg around 30mbps. FPS stays around 30, so it should be where its at, but cpu usage is around 97 percent. Guess I won't be able to decode 1080p 60FPS. My question is how come 7600gt (some desktop models) support purevideo hd whereas my go 7900gs doesnt?

And for the purevideo hd I thought the only advantage is that it supports hd-dvd authorizing? Purevideo basically does the same stuff?

Purevideo HD is hardware acceleration for h264 decoding, and it has been availiable on nVidia cards since 7 series. The 8 series cards get 2nd gen Purevideo HD, which allows the video card to entirely decode h264 - greatly reducing CPU use.

    From AnandTech article:
    h264-decode.jpg

It's a pretty good article about nVidia's 8m series cards, and can be found here: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2984&p=1

Ic, so not possible from hardware standpoint to have 7900 decode h.264 completely?

    The nVidia presentation says so.

Maybe I exaggerated a little, but in worts case scenario it may not be enough:

Very true, if the bitrate were to go above 50Mbps, then I donnt think my computer will be able to handle it. Hope they release a revised purevideo to take more load off the cpu for previous gen graphic cards. I am sure it would be Maybe be like the ati cards and do three steps of the decoding instead of two?

And it still requires HDMI. No thanks. I love HD video, but if it requires me to buy extra hardware and lose my fair-use rights, I'll stay a luddite with my DVD's, thank you very little. I'm excited they have these capabilities, and I'd upgrade if I thought that I could get the acceleration under Linux, but somehow, I doubt that. Who knows, though... maybe I will have to get an 8000 series AGP card, especially if they get the full decoding done on the card like they currently have with MPEG-2.

Sucks for the highend and midrange previous generation graphic card owner. Oh well, guess there won't be that much full hd content to play anyways.
