I'm in the market for a new laptop. My specific question of the day is whether the nVidia Quadro NVS 110M and 120M are any good. I'm ideally looking for something roughly equivalent to my desktop computer's PCIe GeForce 6600GT-OC. I have been unable to find where the 110M and the 120M fit in comparison to the GeForce cards. Please note that while I do a lot of software development, I do not run CAD and the like. This card would be used for gaming.
Also, what's the difference between the two? The 120M seems to use active cooling. I honestly can't find ANY other difference, though. How much more powerful is the 120M?
Finally, and perhaps off-topic for this forum, anyone know how well this card works in Linux? Or even if it is supported at all or will be in the next month or so?

if you will not do CAD work, then stay clear of a quadro..while many people love to argue that it is a sold gaming card, it just ISNT a gaming card. you would be better off with a 6600/x700/6800 anyday.
the difference between them...not sure
lastly, i do not know how well they work in linux.

The problem is, the closest thing that meets my requirements comes with a Quadro 120M. I hear it is basically the same as the GeForce Go7400. I'd certainly much rather get a laptop with a GeForce Go instead of a Quadro but along with my other criteria, it appears that NOBODY makes exactly what I'm looking for.

gaming and seem so sure about it, but then let us know that actually you have
no clue whats the difference to a geforce card.
The 110M and 120M are the same as 7300. It is true that they are meant
for workstation apps, but they dont lose much on game performance because
of that. Quadros are usually clocked lower and that is the main source for
the difference in games. Quadros have greater precision and are optimized for
OpenGL-stuff.
If you are looking a card just for gaming I wouldnt recommend Quadros, mainly
because of the price premium. But if you fancy something with a Quadro card
and have the money buy it. Geforce is a better bang for buck in games, but
quadros do the job equally well. -
selective reading at its best.
