I'm debating between buying a T61 and a T60p... and although I have compared most other aspects.. I am lost when it comes to comparing these two video cards... any suggestions on which one would be better? I do play the occasional game but mostly this will be used as a workstation... maybe a little bit of home video editing as well.

    Try this site:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Grafic-Cards.130.0.html

It has a list (with a few exceptions) of most of the mobile graphics chips available today. Unfortunately, they don't have any benchmarks for the FireGL chip, but it is a "Class 2" chip whereas the Quadro NVS 140 is a "Class 3" chip according to their rankings, which signifies that the FireGL should be more powerful graphics wise than the Quadro.

    Hope this helps

The FireGL is based on the ATI X1700, like the Quadro 140M is based on the Nvidia 8400 model.

That fact that the Quadro 140 kills most models of the 8400 (and actually performs closer to a 8600 than a 8400 ) is enough to say that simply being based on a certain model does not mean you will get performance similar to the model it was based on - I think the 140 does better than most 8400s because of the DDR3 memory.

    For the X1700
    # pipeline: 24 pixel-pipelines and 8 vertex-pipelines
    # clock: chip: 475 MHz, memory: 400 MHz
    # memory: DDR/DDR2/GDDR3/GDDR4, maximum: 256MB, bus: 128Bit
    # directX: 9c, Shader Model 3.0
    # features: Avivo Video and Display Engine, Powerplay 6.0, PCI-E
    # application area: notebooks of medium size and medium weight
    # other infos: 90 nm, 157 millions of transistors, Windows Vista compatible

    And the 140M
    # Pipelines 16 - unified
    # Memory Speed 700 MHz
    # Memory GDDR3, GDDR2 256 MB 64 Bit *T61's use 128MB of DDR3
    # Memory Type GDDR3, GDDR2
    # TurboCache
    # DirectX DirectX 10, Shader 4.0
    # Current Consumption 10 Watt
    # Transistors 210 Million

The main difference is the Quadro is 64 bit VS FireGL at 128 bit, the memory definitely plays a big part but I have little experience with the ATI card. The benchmarks put the FireGL over the Quadro.

The FireGL results are those of the X1700 from notebookcheck, the Quadro results are the results I got using my own T61
    # Benchmark FireGL_____Quadro
    # 3DMark01: 19900_____16000
    # 3DMark03: 7200______5600
    # 3DMark05: 4200______3200
    # 3DMark06: 2330______1700

It seems the FireGL should be the superior card, but since just being based on the x1700 is not enough to say you will get similar results - In practical use they probably perform very similar until you load up demanding games.
