Quake 4 runs better on my notebook.![]()
Desktop = amd 3800 x 2 / 2 gig ram / 7800 gt
Notebook = intel duo core 2ghz / 2 gig ram / 7900 GS
Notebook = better frames and smoother gameplay.![]()
Is it the 7900 gs or is the core duo faster than the amd CPU in my desktop?
Thank you.![]()

Hard to say. Since the 7800GT is a desktop card, it's probably equal to or better than the 7900GS. I'd say it's the Core Duo. These things are lightning fast little processors. Hard drive may also have something to do with it if it's a 7200 vs 5400, but with 2 gigs of RAM, Quake4 shouldn't be dipping into the Virtual Memory too much.

Yah, it must be the core duo. The desktop uses SATA 7200 RPM drives and the notebook is 7200 RPM (not sure what kind of bus it uses). Do you have any links to core duo vs. amd benchmarks?

I would also have to say its the processor.
my setup :desktop
AMD 64 3200 OC'd to 2.2GHz.
2GB of DDR GSkill ram at 2.5 3 3 6
eVGA 7800 GT CO
3Dmark05 = mid to low 7000's with stock card clocks
notebook
intel core duo T2400 @ 1.83 GHz
1 Gb of DDR2 5 5 5 15
dell 7900GS
3dmark05 = 6250
I need to try 3dmark06 for a better single core vs dual core compare though. -
Test them both with 3DMark05 and/or '06.
I think its mainly the 7900GS. Its quite a powerful card. Its better than the 7800GTX Go in games but not neccesarily with 3DMarks.
If it was a 7800GTX on your desktop then I would think ur desktop would be quicker. -

Do you have the dual-core patch installed on both systems? I doubt it is your processor . . the AMD X2 3800+ is a strong CPU.

Ah, my desktop is 7800 GT, so is the 7900 GS more powerful?
The desktop was running Windows XP Pro and the notebook is using Windows XP Home Edition. I wonder if Pro had a bunch of extra services running.
Yes, running Quake 4 1.3 with SMP enabled.
Hrm, okay playing SpellForce 2, there is more slow-down with tons of activity. It's possibly the video card is stronger and Quake 4 relies heavily on the GPU, whereas a game like SpellForce 2 is more CPU bound due its RPG/RTS nature, controlling tons of AI. -
but the 7800gt is a desktop card, which are usually more powerful then the go cards. i would expect the 7800gt to outpreform the go 7900gs.

Yes, you would think. It must be something else.
-
maby the ram on your desktop is ddr (i know most of the laptops with amd's use slow ram ), much slower, while your laptop uses ddr2 for twice the effective clockrates.?
-
Also make sure you consider the state of your Windows install on each computer. A computer you just bought isn't going to have as much crap as one with an install 2-3 years old.

seems a stupid question but wth... are they at the same resolution?

googled, somewherere on the first page:

The 7900gs and the 7800gt should be pretty comparable... Maybe the 7900 does better with some stuff since it's newer. Checked your drivers and driver settings? (stuff like setting it to "performance" instead of "quality" and things)
also, clock rates, things running on windows, obscure game settings... lots of stuff to consider. -

Yeah the cards are pretty similar anyway...
-
7800GTX- 24 pipes, 8 vertex shaders
7900GS- 20 pipes, 7 shaders
The only thing better about the 7900GS is the fact that it is more efficient, consumig less power and generating less heat, so it DOES OC better. At stock though, the 7800GTX wins -
