Hi, Everybody, I bought a HP dv5000 CTO laptop. Its graphic card is Geforce go 7400. Generally, it is with 128MB dedicated Memory and 128MB shared (total 256MB), right? The total RAM of my laptop is 2 GB. But I checked the system information, the available physical memory is only about 1.6G. It seems that there is no dedicated 128MB memory with Geforce go 7400. Would you please give me some explanation? Thanks.

No, it's 128 Dedicated + 128 Shared = 256 Total, as you say. Available physical memory..are you getting this from the Cntl+Alt+Del dialog? That shows what is being consumed by your OS at the time as well.

To see what your computer thinks it actually has installed for memory, right click on "My Computer", and the go to Properties. It should tell you in the lower-right part of that dialog. The other stuff that Gautam referred to above is related to how Windows allocates memory and such, and even Microsoft engineers don't understand the full story of that ;)

The Go7400 in your notebook is 128MB dedicated; it can share up to 384MB of memory from the system RAM for a total of 512MB.

You can check how much "video memory" you have - right-click Desktop, Properties, Settings tab, Advanced button. Go over to the Adapter tab and look next to "Memory Size."

Isn't this something that Vista would do anyway? Because in Vista, all graphics card drivers have to support using system RAM directly as video RAM. The only difference I can see is that the "shared" video RAM is for the GPU only, no other apps will be able to use it.

to get the exact break down try hitting Fn+Esc (you might need to hold down escape for a second or 2) this at least works on my HP dv6000t. This will give you a system information window and listed next to Total Memory it will show the total installed, how much is used for the system and how much is being used for video. For example mine shows: 2GB (1.88GB system+ 128MB video). Oh and I also have the 7400: 128 shared, 128 dedicated.
