I was reading the Tabook, and under the T60p I noticed that it said "ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 (256MB)"

I tried searching on Google and ATI's site and could find ZERO info about this new card.

Does anyone know about this? Is it a new release from ATI by any chance? And most importantly, is it a good graphics card when looking at "future-proofing" your notebook? (note: I know nada about this kind of stuff).

It's not for games; it is a developers card, designed for 3D rendering and design.

It is probably based off of the X1600.

If you mean future-proof by running Windows Vista, check my graphics card guide - link is in my signature.

I too would like to know more about this V5200 thingie and what it's based on. If it's X1600-based, it's cool - that's a very good video card and will run all today's games like a breeze. If it's X1400-based, it's considerably less cool, as even an X700 would be somewhat faster. With that said, if it's to be any better than the FireGL V5100, which was X800-based, it should kick ass.

In either case, I'd say it's good enough for future-proofing. But that's without knowing the details.

the extra cost of a fireGL and or Quadro's are not worth-it in my opinion if the purpose is for games.

That's true, but if one is getting a Thinkpad p-model for general purpose work and gets the extra benefit of a high-end video card, it can be nice.

Just another thing you might want to consider about the Thinkpad Txxp series - they are very expensive!

If you are interested in graphics design, there are cheaper notebooks you can buy. ThinkPads are the best though.

Dell's Precision Mobile Workstations M20 and M70 have OpenGL optimized cards, give them a look. ;)

    Cheers

this notebook looks very nice pro GL card and long battery life too. I might look into it too in the future since i use Maya.

I just assume the purpose of the original poster was in regards to gaming performance since it is posted here in the gaming category of the forums.

now i'm not hardcore gamer nor am i a FPS gamer but i hear that a gaming card of same equivalent will still be faster for games specially with 3rd party drivers specific for games.

The drivers for these pro cards will be optimized for GL
