Probably the wrong place to post this, but I couldn't think of what sub-forum on this site to put this in so apologies in advance.

I have a ? re. the new range of GPUs by nVidia -

Is the NVIDIA GeForce G 105M 512mb better or equal to the Geforce 9600M GS 512mb?

Yer tianxia is right, I second that.

9600GS is a moderated performance card while the G105M is an entry level like the 9300GS.

For the old lines, the 1st number would denote the generation and the 2nd number would denote the range of the video card, the 3rd digit being an addition to the generation, and the last letters being the rank of video card within a range.

For example, 9650M GT -> 9th generation (might not exactly be 9th generation but comparatively vs. 8xxx, 7xxx, 6xxx series), 6th range is the mainstream (8th is enthusiast, 2/3/4th are entry level), GT being better than GS (usually GTX > GTS > GT > GS > G, with few exceptions).

The newest generation, I think GTX/GTS is for the enthusiast, GT (ie. 120M) is for mainstream, and GT (ie. 102M)/G is entry level.

NVIDIA GeForce G series(notebook) is lower end(3rd class which is same class with 9300MGS, Mobility Radeon HD 4530, GeForce 8400M GT and many more).
But NVIDIA GeForce GT series is higher end(2nd class which is same class with 9600MGS, 9500MGS, Quadro FX 2700M, Mobility Radeon HD 4650 and so on) than NVIDIA GeForce G series.
I heard Acer is using Nvidia more and more now.
Even the motherboard is using Nvidia ION.

105 M has a lower amount of shaders compared to the 9600GS. Just because they have the same amount of VRAM doesn't mean they're equivalent in performance.

FX 2700M is based on the 9700M GTS and is not in the 2nd tier with the rest. It has 256-bit bus width. Also, there are some 64-bit GT series such as 102M, which kinda throws off the whole naming scheme (though I hope it is a typo).
