Upon research and this forum, I've given up hope upgrading the graphics card on my laptop. but this chart says that its possible to upgrade, and this chart which compares the 94XXX chip sets the 945GM has a discrete graphics option as well as having the integrated option.

Can someone clarify this for me? I was under the impression the only way you could upgrade was if your laptop was MXM (II) compatible, i would appreciate someone clearing this up for me.

The second chart you linked to merely states that the 945GM chipset has an external PCI-E x16 capability in addition to the integrated GPU - that is, if your manufacturer so chose, they could attach a dedicated GPU to that mainboard chipset, but unlike with the PM, it is not necessary. This does NOT indicate necessarily the presence of an MXM slot: chances are still good - I mean like 99.99999999% of the time - that if you have a GMA950 (or 900, or X3100) in your laptop, there's no MXM slot.
