I am about to buy an Alienware m14x laptop
    i have the choice between

    1.5GB DDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M using NVIDIA Optimus™ technology

    3.0GB DDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M using NVIDIA Optimus™ technology

ive been seeing that the second option is pointless as most programs even exceed 1 gb or something like that. clearly i am inexperienced so please excuse my noobness lol
but my question is, since my laptop is going to be 1600x900 resolution and it is hdmi compatible..if i get a 21.5 inch monitor and i hook it up wit the m14x via hdmi..
would it affect my fps? would i need the 3.0GB DDR3 NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M using NVIDIA Optimus™ technology? or can i stick with the 1.5 GB and i would get the same performance anyways on a monitor?

External monitor doesn't affect fps, only resolution does. Go with 1.5Gb version as everybody else suggested.
