Hi..
i don't know to much about laptops as i am new to them, but was thinking of buying a desktop replacement pc where i can also game..but i wanted to ask a few questions..mainly regarding the 8600M GT...
1) Which PC graphics card is the 8600M GT(roughly) equivalent of?
2) I believe the 8600M GT/8700M is the best card out there correct? What is the range of difference in graphics between the 8700m and 8600m if any?
3) Will the 8600M GT able to run new games farely well with decent graphics, generally without slowdown? (i am thinking of new or upcoming games like PES, FIFA, COD4, MOH, BIOSHOCK and maybe even crysis etc)
please reply..thanks!

Well, i am definitely not an expert of whatsoever, but according to what i heard and as in your case, go for 8700M GT.
8700M GT is 25~30% more powerful then 8600M GT.
8700M GT only available for 17 inch notebook(maybe or above) while 8600M GT only available for 15 inch notebook(again, maybe or above or below).
One of the advantage of 8600M GT is it consume less power meaning you will be given longer battery life, but since you're taking it as your desktop replacement, battery life should not be your concern.
Overall, go for a 8700M GT if you don't need the battery life. -
8700m GT is essentially the 8600m GT with higher clocks.
But yes, it is better, and if you're going for a 17" notebook, you should get the 8700m GT to game. That is, if you absolutely cannot wait for the 8800 series. -
i see....thanks for the replies...i haven't come across many 8700m notebooks..but i will look it up..
i was asking about the 8600m GT since i was mainly thinking about the MSI GX700 since that looked the best laptop (in terms of price and overall features)..but i don't know now -

As for question 2, the 7950 GTX is still the best card to be found in any notebook in terms of raw power. The drawback is, of course, that it's only dx9.
-
The fastest cards are the 79XX GTX series hands down. If you want the absolutely best performance you should be looking into a system with one (or possibly two ;-)) of those.

thanks for the replies..this is getting more complicated lol...i'm gonna take a look at these gfx cards now

but they fail once dx10 exclusive games come out
-
the 8600 and 8700 cards out run the 7900/7950---plus it does have the DX 10
-
Can you show us your link with some benchmarks please because ALL my links show the opposite.
As for DirectX 10 I would not bother trying to run on anything less than a 8800 which is not available for laptops. -

"The GeForce 8700M GT is the world’s first DirectX® 10 graphics processor for enthusiast notebooks delivering unparalleled visual realism and performance. For the serious gamer, notebook PCs users with GeForce 8700M GT will experience gaming in a whole new way..."
- official statement from Nvidia.

You did not read carefully.
It says it is the faster DX10. The same could be said if for example the first DX10 card they produced was their entry one. As I said I wouldn't bother to even try and play any real DX10 capable games on anything less than a 8800 card.
So, can we have the link to some game benchamarks showing the 8700 beeing faster than a 7950 series card? -
It is clear that 7950 is king of notebook GPU's DirectX versions aside.
For 15" laptop, 8600m GT is the best to get, especially the GDDR3 version, but that's only in a select few laptops. DDR2 memory is more common because it is cheaper and because it is clocked slower, uses less power.
For 17" or larger laptop, 8700m GT is the DirectX 10 king, and 7950 GT/GTX is the DirectX 9 king. The 7950 is hands down faster (still) than anything else in the laptop world right now.
Keep in mind that very few games will be DirectX 10 only over the couple of years, except for those released by Microsoft. DirectX 10 is Vista only, so it will take some time for the majority of the market to be updated to Vista either through self upgrade, or when buying a new PC. It took years for XP only titles to be released.
Right now Halo 2 and Shadowrun are the only DirectX 10 exclusive games. So buying a laptop that is DirectX 9 only would not be such a terrible thing. Chances are that you'll be ready to replace your current laptop with a new one by the time a majority of games become DirectX 10 only. -
for long term dx10 cards is the way to go.
if you plan to replace your laptop in 1 year, then go for dx9 card.
