My budget at the moment is only allowing me to buy a gaming laptop (from MSI) with the Geforce GTX965M Ti at max.
(Ti stands for revised/tweaked edition, the new 965M is ~20% better than old 965M in benchmarks. You can look for it)
My question is as follows:
Being only 20-25% behind the 970M, is this GPU still worth it to buy in a laptop and play games with for few years? I cannot afford the 970M and I'm not really interested in running the newest upcoming games at high/max settings. The heaviest game I'll probably be playing is GTA V. How long will it take this GPU to be entirely as obsolete as my Intel HD3000 at the moment?![]()
Let me guys know. Thanks!

Pretty much all modern games are playable right now on like highish with it. It should be able to handle mediumish settings for a while to come with the exception of games like Star Citizen. Any games that are on console should totally be playable on that card.SkidrowSKT likes this.

Hey it's you again xD Thanks for the feedback!
No heavy games are in my mind (with the exception of GTA V, but I've seen its benchmarks and they were satisfying). Most of the games I'm playing are 2012-2014ish, and older PS2 exclusive games via PCSX2. -
That kind of stuff will be easily handled by it. Its more if you were expecting to play battlefield 1 on ultra or something that probably won't happen, but it will be playable on decent settings.
And yeah I'm all over the place today lol.
I'm selling a Razer Blade with an 870m on the forum too if you really want
, similar performance for less money. Though the battery life isn't great anymore.

Hmm, there is no 965M Ti. You should wait a couple weeks for the announcement of the new Pascal GPU's.
The 1060 will be within your budget and performs close to that of a GTX 980. Yes, that good. -
Agreed, OP should wait.. Pascal GPUs will be better and 1060 should be in budget range and will own 965M..

Then what is this?
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-965M-2016-Refresh-N16E-GR-Review.158192.0.html
Surely, it's not officially named 965M Ti, but it performs better than the 965M launched in 2015. -
There was never a 965M Ti in production. I think it was planned or rumored but scrapped.
Just wait for the 1060.

Make life simple - call it the GM206 GTX 965M
The older one was a GM204 chip.
-
yes you are correct, there are 2 versions of 965m which are based on 2 different chips GM206 and GM204. The GM206 ofc better but now its old and also not too many sellers who are offering it, I knew only 1 model which is the Clevo P641RF (USB type C, 3.1 bla bla bla). In the end, for the amount of time spent for waiting the new laptop with gtx1060 you can try to save up and increase your budget a bit more ($200-$300: I think) and get a much more better laptop.
First sentence is correct, nVidia never had anything like GTX 965m Ti, the new 965m is a upgraded model of the old chip and its called GTX 965m also
.
Second sentence, check the clevo P641RF as I mentioned above. -
1060 will cost more
965m will max battlefield 1 not sure where you get your facts from. but a member here with a 880m maxed it at 50fps on the beta version. 880m=965m.
ps emulators rely heavily on cpu. make sure its a i7. but obviously it is.
maxing in my terms is above 30fps some form of aa and all sliders up. if you agree then expect to max everything except xcom2 and witcher 3. you will be able to max most new games by my terms for another year with the odd exception. future proof wise it will last the typical 4-5 years untill you have to lower resolution on the majority of games. 2 years out minus 4-5 leaves you with 2-3 more years of satisfaction if medium/low doesnt bother you on the last year with most games... but tbh sometimes the best games can be well optimised and play well even maxed on old hardware just dont expect crysis 4 esque games to be more than a slide showSkidrowSKT likes this. -
heres the proof grabbed from page 3 of the forum from OPs first comment on BF1
quote:
Hello guys, I managed to get access to the BF1 Closed Alpha. I was testing the game out on my AW18 and running the game maxed out & DX12. Please note that this game is running with a single GTX880. Force render frame 2 causes the driver and game to crash. I could get 40fps average and the max is 50fps.
Due to the NDA Agreement, I can't post any screenshots but I will once it has been lifted. Just thought I might share this detail with you guys. Also desktop GTX980 is running around 90fps on ground battles. Air battles is 120-150fps maxed out @ DX12 -
Thanks for the input!
Indeed, I was checking the *new* 965M benchmarks and I suddenly realized it does just as good (if not a tiny bit lower) than the 880M, which would suit me perfect because I'm not even willing to run games like Crisis 4 (GTA V is an exception, but as long as I can play the game smooth at 1080p regardless of the settings, it should be satisfactory).
I honestly cannot sit and wait for the 1060 laptops to be released just to find out they are overpriced. I'm in an urgent need of a laptop (preferably before September), and I need something that could stand out in terms of overall performance for a couple or more years. -

The 970m laptops are gone from Microcenter. There are still ones going for close to $1k at newegg. So the next-gen laptops are near.

With the 1060 being round 980 performance, it would be worth it to hold off. but the 970m should be in 1050Ti territory. The 970m should last a while, most games are console ports. Plus the 970m has a much better VRAM bandwidth, which is the thing that is probably going to kill the 965m the quickest ...even before the 2GB VRAM limit.
I can see the 970m lasting the console generation for ports, but not the 965m. -
not a big difference between 970m and 965m.. ive watched alot of videos on youtube and difference is only like 5fps...not like its 20fps
-
Well that's why I said it, 40fps average would make me drop a few settings, I'm shooting for magical 60. If 30+ is all you need it'll max it no problems.
-
I really wish I could wait. I'm sitting next to a dying 6YO laptop and I can't keep using it for another year in the university. Even the charger is no longer working properly and I have to fix it every month to keep it operational.
Pascal laptops won't be coming too soon here. I know they will be announced in big retailers the next month, but I cannot in any way wait for 4 to 5 months for Pascals to come to the retailers nearby. (Yes I asked them, they bring new products but it usually is too late compared to the official announcements).
I made this thread because my budget is extremely tight (1150 euros) and the best GPU I can afford is the 965M (MSI GE62 is currently on sale for 1050EUR). 970M still sell here but they are too expensive. I just wanted to know how long this GPU will survive, excluding better and more expensive options and of course excluding the fact waiting is worth it. :/ -

I don't know your specific country [you can select up top], but this 970m laptop looks like it could just squeeze into your budget when going with 8GB of RAM. If you have any left over after that, get the thermal paste redone. -
although i own a 965m i wish i went with 970m and got a refurbished 970m laptop from newegg. listen to thegreatsquare and try to get a 970m and if all else fails get the 965m its a win win
-
Do you have the tweaked 965M?
I live in Morocco, but I buy electronics from Ceuta (A city in Morocco but follows the tax rules of Spain, so basically it's like I'm buying a laptop from Spain).
The laptop you referred to does not sell in Spain, unfortunately, I checked with 2 retailers and they have never sold Proteus laptops. Hell, 965M, 8GB of RAM and no SSD costs 1080Euros. 970M laptops with minimum configuration start from 1500 euros, which is something I can in no way afford before September 15th (must have a functional laptop at that time). -
Posts relating to machine sales deleted. We have the NBR Marketplace for that.

I would get a 970M one.. You can get the PC specialist laptop shipped to you.. 970M is way more futureproof then a 965M..

Why not just wait for Pascal announcements. If you don't like it get a 9xxM at that point. There will be some to buy still, new and used.

Seeing how the newer laptops from MSI with the GTX 1060 are priced, it looks like my budget will only fit for a 965M. Even those with the 970M are still too much.
-
Just wait a bit, prices will go down... Also see my PM...
-
Man, it looks like waiting is the perfect choice in my case. My laptop is antique but I can suffer few more months if it means I'm getting a laptop with the 1060 (even for 1600$). I'll do my best to save as much as I can so I'll be able to snatch a 1060 and thus having done the best upgrade of my life.
P.S I don't see a PM from your end... -
Just sent it and where are you located?

Morocco, in North Africa. We are located just under spain. (Roughly 70km far oversea)TomJGX likes this.
