I am waiting for an M17x to get delivered and in the meantime have seen some ridiculous deals on Steam....Can I sign up for Steam on my ghetto laptop which can't play any of these games and then purchase the games...And wait to download on my M17x when it gets here in a couple of weeks?
I'm a console gamer, and haven't gamed on a laptop for 20 years, so forgive my newbieish.
Does Steam work like a Wii where purchases are tied to that particular system, or like PS3 and Xbox Live which are tied to account/sign-ins.
Thx in advance for help.

hi
think that should be no problem as they are tied to the account and you can only have it open one 1 computer at a time. so buy away today and download when aw arrives. -
Yes you can buy them on whatever you have now and just don't install them.
-
No problem OP I do that all the time. What's cool about Steam is that you can install them any computer you have and download them whenever you want. It's like your personal Games Vault.
Everything in Steam is tied to your account. -
Nice, thank you for the info. About to buy a bunch of games, these deals are sick!!!!!

Just a note for first time Steam buyers, during this big sale: Until the last day ONLY BUY DEALS OF THE DAY. Although almost all games are on sale, until they are the deal of the day they have the potential to be even cheaper the next day. On the last day of the sale, buy any extra games you wanted. Last year I went :O SALE! and bought Torchlight for $10 down from $20, only to see it slip to $5 the next day.

You can actually download and install them on your current computer, then use the backup feature and move it to your new computer when you get it. That way, you can save many hours of downloading later.
-
How about games that are already discounted 75% (like Civ 4 or Trine)? Can they get any cheaper? By the way, is it possible for a game to become a daily deal more than once?
-
i think 75% is a lot, and if it gets cheaper than that, the difference will be marginal?
-
I don't know, saving money is saving money no matter how much.

Well that's why you wait until the last day of the sale right? Unless you're really itching to play it asap.
On occasion steam has used the last night day to be a "best of deals of the day" but that's pretty rare -
Totally agree, take for example F1 2010 which was 50% off @ $19.99 even if it drops more no biggie for me. And I bought BF2 for $6.79 so if it drops further I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem buying a $60 console game and watching it drop 50-65% of it's value within a couple of months.

Just make sure you uninstall STEAM if you sell your old laptop.
-
The page isn't displaying correctly on IE6 here at work, does anyone know what the last day of the sale is?
-
Jan the 2nd.
-
This is my first Christmas sale on Steam, and I decided to spend up to a certain amount only, so things don't get out of hand.
If I save a couple bucks in a game, that means I'll be able to buy another game.
-
once a game gets to 5 dollars, don't expect it to go lower. 75% off is a very generous amount off. if you want to gamble, go ahead.
-
I will, And this laptop is an HP Pavilion DV4, so it can't play any of these games anyway...I just dropped a lot of money yesterday, and could have easily spent another $200. Steam is sick, coming from a console gamer who monitors CAG for deals, and has to go to 5-10 diff. retailers to get those deals, this is way better...Plus once I get my M17x, it will be instant gratification when you make the purchase, and you don't even need to leave your house?
I mean RE5 for $10!, Hitman Blood Money for $5, Bioshock for $5, the Rockstar Collection for $40!!!! That's sick values, and I love looking at all the indie games, some of those games I have never heard of or seen before, and I'm a hardcore 30+ year old console gamer whose played everything on a console pretty much ever.
I'm really excited to get into PC gaming, I hope the M17x is as beastly as I believe it will be. -
if youve never played it i can highly recommend the orange box
-
Dude, was just looking at that...Now I have never played a half life game ever...Is it worth it to get the Valve collection, which is $50, or do I just go straight for the Orange Box?
-
Get the entire Valve Complete Pack. Considering you'll often pay more than $50 for a single new game these days, it is an absolute steal. Over the years, I've bought every single game in that pack one at a time, and they've all been worth it at full price.

If you sell your old laptop you better do more than uninstall steam. You better wipe it and fresh install.
But Steam is great. Not much caught my interest yet though. Still waiting on a great deal on Fallout New Vegas and Dragon Age Origins Ultimate. -
Maybe some of you Steam vets can answer this for me. I was downloading F1 2010 which is about 7.9GB
and while downloading the laptop went into sleep mode.
Is the download corrupted, do I need to start over or is the Steam client designed to correctly pickup where it left off? I ask because i'm half way thru, would hate to find out after the download completes lol. -

Nope, just fire steam up again and continue. Good thing about steam is your game doesn't have to be a one session download. (if it had to be it'd be kinda ridiculous)
