So I have a P150EM (specs listed in sig) that I plan on recording starcraft 2 vids with in order to commentate them to hopefully remedy my stuttering problem by constantly talking. However, fraps stutters SC2 quite often, every 5 secs there is a 1s stutter where fps drops to 0. I have heard you need to record to a second hard drive in order to not experience this constant stutter.
However, the question I have is, does it make a difference if I record to an external? I've been planning and buying an external caddy and taking the 250 GB HDD out of my MacBook..

It's always adviced to record on a second hdd different from the one where your Os/game installation is.
I don't have starcraft but I guess it streams a lot from the hdd so that could be a problem.
At least you could do a little test maybe with a fast USB drive althought compared to an hdd is notably slower. -

external would probably be okay, usb 2.0 might be a problem.
you could experiment msi afterburner as well. it's free (unlike fraps) and it will almost certainly provide a better result. -
Well, the P150EM has an e-SATA port, will that help? I was planning to place an SSD in the main hard drive bay when prices drop, so then I could move the 750 GB to the ODD. Don't feel like moving anything now though, would prefer to stick with an external, haha.

I just recorded some SC2 gameplay without any stuttering, straight to the hdd. What framerate and resolution are you recording it at?

My fraps videos have a bitrate of 800000kbps (ugh).. I myself haven't had any stuttering when recording tf2 or minecraft, but I have a 7200rpm HDD if that makes a difference. But 1.6GB for a 53 second video is insane.

I changed from fraps to MSI Afterburner and it doesn't lag at all (even when recording uncompressed video)

You might want to consider upgrading your HDD to a hybrid drive (significantly cheaper than SSD but almost as fast).
Also, there are other free apps that can record high res video, such as MSI Afterburner and Xsplit. -

MSI Afterburner is one of the best recording tools available imo.
- 100% free
- Does not lag as much as fraps
- Records smaller files
- Has multiple codecs (MJPG and RTV1)
- Has a quality slider (25%-100%)
- Gamma correction
- Framerate limiter
- Custom framesizes (i.e. play at 1080p and record at 720p or even at 4:3)
- Detailed overlay (time, filesize, etc)
- Built in GPU overclocking/fan control -
Personally i have moved to Dxtory since its a good fit with XSplit.
XSplit Game Source is terrible.
