Hi all, I have been ever so wanting to get into some of the new mmorpgs beta's for this year and it looks like RIFT will be the first One I get into this upcoming week. I have a beta key that can work for 25 other people, all you need to do is make an accout at rift.com( link) and then add the beta key into your account you made. Here are there instructions

    Here is the beta key
Once you have entered the beta key into your account you will get another email giving you the client download link where you can install the game from. From what Im downloading now its reading at 7.4 gigs. The next beta starts on the 25th and lasts for 3 days.

mmorpg.com still has a lot. just create an account.

    Rift Beta Key Grab!

You still have to be invited to the beta events in order to get to play, though.

I tried the game and found it quite entertaining, however I'm burnt out from MMO's partially due to WoW. Going to stick with RTS/TB-RTS for a while.

    Thnx for the beta key!

Me and a friend used it and got in, now were both thinking of getting it!

The way the multi class system works greatly appeals to us, especially coming from WoW. The whole concept of the game just works for us, might even cancel our WoW accounts if we get too into it :D

This was a game I didn't really know was coming out, hadn't heard alot of chatter about it from anyone, glad you brought it to our attention!

Just to let you guys know how good this MMO is, over a quarter of my WoW server first guild plays it regularly and some are even thinking about fully switching over to Rift. My guild has tried every MMO yet and all of them (and me, except for STO since I'm a die-hard fan of the ST series) have failed to please them, however that's not the case with Rift.

You'll especially love it if you're coming from WoW. Rift's official website has a pretty damn good video posted on the main page which is worth checking.

Same here! Me and my friend have played WoW since vanilla beta, and we thought it was so good we both went and bought collectors editions online last night!

Alot of people in my Rift guild said they were making a full transfer over from WoW to rift. WoW has gotten to the point where i log on, do dailies, maybe a heroic for valor points and then i just work on leveling another character. Heck even my Dad who is a huge WoW fanatic just purchased his Collectors and is letting his Warcraft account lapse next billing cycle.

WoW killer? Doubt it, good competition? I think it could be.

I have to say - it seems like WoW reskinned. This is partially my fault - in an effort to get a place to start from and not be overwhelmed, i chose what I thought would be similar classes to a couple of my old WoW characters - an Assasin (rogueish) and a pyromancer mage (fore mageish).

What I didn't expect was they'd be identical. Assasin - stealth, backstabs, etc. Fire mage seems to have the same spells, just renamed. Mechanics are same (mana, fireball timed casts followed by instant casts, etc; and the rogue uses energy and generates combo points for finishers...)

I dunno - I respect that they don't want to go too far from an established starting point like WoW, but I was hoping to see some differences. Next time (if I get into another beta) I'll have to strike out into completely uncharted waters to see if it was just my choices that made it feel this way - but it certainly felt like WoW with better graphics and world events.

I made it to level 20, beat the last boss in the first instance Iron Tombs on the defiant side, was epicly fun and have pvp'd some. The only thing I havent been able to do is crafting.

I dont know how well RIFT is going to do in long run. I will say I have never experienced quite as massive groupings in RIFT as I have in any other game including wow. There are literally thousands of people you can count in dense areas all doing something or another.

I really want to try it out, however, I have lost faith in mmos like because of poor endgame content and horrible balancing problems. Just because something seems fun for the first 10 levels doesn't mean it will be cool a year later. The graphics look great. Is beta still on? I might take a peek.

Heh, Rift will be like any of the other recent MMOs. It has a nice gimmick the Rift. But few months, everyone will be bored. And then realize that WoW may not be ideal, but it's pvp balance and constant support and updates is unmatched. The boss fights for progression still unrivaled. Masses will quit WoW briefly thinking Rift is awesome. 2 months later, will all sworm back to WoW.

Happened with AoC. Happened with Aion. Happened with Warhammer. Each of these games had updated, better graphics and each had their smaller gimmick And each ended up with everyone returning to WoW.

I see no reason why Rift will be different.

you know that is spot on, warhammer was an amazing game during the first 3 tiers though, leveling on pvping. it just got silly in tier 4 when every class had tons of crowd control and bright wizards blowing whole teams up. Aion was boring from the start.

At least it'll be 2-3 months of "change" ;) I'll still keep my sub to WoW since I love rated BG's (only thing I really do now), however I'll be giving Rift a shot ...now the hard part: picking a good class :p

Open beta starts Feb 15th for 6 days. Though I share Ruckus' apathy for the game and have been ignoring beta invites after the 3rd one. Polished WoW clone, but still a WoW clone.

what im finding hard to understand here is everyone saying that its a WoW clone like thats a bad thing.......there is a reason WoW is the #1 MMO of all time, so why wouldnt people use the ideas from the game?.....

i personally haven't played WoW (well no more than 45mins) so for me rift could be a great game, WoW clone or not......i guess what im saying is just because something is a clone of something else doesnt mean its not a good or even great game in its own right, for example Titan Quest is a Diablo clone but still a great game in its own right...

there seems like enough in Rift to interest newbies like me and there seems enough difference between it and WoW to take some of its subscribers as well...

Well said, mtness - I think the main complaint (at least for me) is that I want enough similarity to be good (admittedly, yes, WoW has some good things going for it) but would also like to see enough differences to keep it fresh.

So, you're right though - it's not all bad that it resembles WoW!

It's only a bad thing if you try to advertise a game as being innovative and moving the genre further along. Then your first ad has the line "You're not in Azeroth anymore." Except everything in the game feels exactly like WoW, the games that WoW is derived from, and the games that are derived from WoW.

That being said RIFT is not bad as a game. The engine is very polished and the graphics look nice. It's not the best looking game, and doesn't run as smooth as a matured MMO but it is among the best I've played in beta.

It's just not for someone who's looking for something different than WoW after playing that game for countless hours over the years. It is also not for someone who was never able to get into WoW/DIKU/EQ/etc-style games. While you are the kind of person that I would recommend RIFT to, I wouldn't recommend it over WoW. Especially since WoW already has an established endgame, constant content additions, and a huge playerbase (which is both good and bad).

Yeh that is very true, but what makes WOW so successful as well is it's so simple to use, I find it really dumbed down. You forget that WOW has taken a lot of ideas from other games too over the years as its progressed. I guess all developers take ideas from other titles.

I'm registered with open beta, it can't hurt I guess, in a way I hope I don't like it as I know it will be very time consuming. I have way more responsibilities these days can't really spend 8 hours a day grinding.

I'm hoping it'll have a PVP system like WoW. I like being able to log in twice a week, play two nights of competitive rated BG's and have the best gear in the game (in PVP of course). :p

If it has a system similar to that and it's not a High Warlord 80hrs/week grind-fest like in vanilla WoW, I'm game, haha :)

Still so undecided on a class to choose. I've reviewed all of them and I just can't decide. Either melee or a healer ...never liked casters.

What classes have you guys selected?

Well since I will be playing with a friend of mine and my dad I figured we would try to cover 3 major dungeon roles between us. I think my friend is going a tank type spec.

I'm probably going to heal, tried out sentinel/justicar/purifier if I remember right and might stick with that. Dad is going standard Caster DPS so all we'll have to do is find 2 DPS to pug and were set.

But nothing is set in stone, this last beta will be my last try at every combination of Caster or Healer I can do and see which fit me best. Definetly not melee, never liked Melee in any MMO yet. WoW I play resto/elemental shaman so a heals/Caster DPS combo is my goal.

This is both my greatest hope and worst fear with the game - what drove me from WoW was the cookie cutter builds - the idea that, while I could spec any way I wanted to, if I didn't go the 'best route' i was gimping myself. So I felt there weren't really any choices to be made with my characters.

The customization options in Rift are really what intrigued me initially - but I'm very afraid that once all you smart folks really analyze the possible combinations, one clear winner 'spec' will emerge for each type of play (heals, DPS, tank) and that'll be it. Serious folks will take those specs, folks who are playing for fun will try other specs but not be as effective...

Though I don't see how they could possible do it - what I'm really hoping for is that the souls system will offer choices that are meaningful and allow true customization of my character, without being out of balance or so watered down that they're irrelevant. (A tall order, I know, but I can dream, can't I?) :)

Rift is a massive game. Weather or not it is because beta I cant say for sure but Iv never had so many characters on screen from NPC's to players. There are literally thousands in dense spacing, between rifts/towns/quest area's it boggs down heavily when this happens.

There are a lot of settings you can change but compared to other mmo's turning down the settings didn't quite effect as much as I was thinking it would. I did play with the laptop in my sig, and I hadn't had any game since I got it push my machine, but I ended up overclocking and using gamebooster on it to get to 70 frames per second with the near to the lowest settings. Even when I did this, when there are 300 people in on the screen at the same time its though to keep a decent frame rate, my laptop would fall down to 15 fps some times when so many people were on the screen but most the time it stayed between 20-30 in the huge rift groups. There are a few settings in game that make a big impact, shadows dropped my frames by about 7 frames and then of course AA dropped it another 3-4, and AF did another 3. With the settings turned up to just medium I was getting prob close to 35 or so fps.

I would say it is the most demanding game Iv ever played but I haven't played to many til recently so that may be the cause. Some people say they think the graphics of the game isnt good, I think its fantastic. The objects/npc's/players rom distances look as if they were painted by a artist to me, they represent them selves in a fasion that is beatifull to the eye, and the proportions are just fun to look at, they look like art well designed and thought out. Its definitely the most beatifull game I have ever played if nothing else but this could also be because of my new laptop.

Rift <3, I quit Aion due to boredom months ago and this is the perfect game to hold me over to DIII/GW2. Im lucky enough to have played with a few good players in Aion to get into a good guild in Rift.
So far I am playing a justicar/shaman/druid which I am loving, Ive been playing with different souls and have a caster cleric as well that does some nice damage.
I played a pyromancer/elementalist/cant remember in one of the betas and that was a blast too. So far I am loving the game play and am super excited to get into the PVP aspect (ive only been able to get to lvl 15 on any of my characters because I always work during betas). The only thing that kept me playing Aion so long was the PVP which was wicked.

just wanted to add that I have no idea what the system reqs are on the game, I am playing on my desktop (quad core) with only a moderately good gpu (9800gt) and it plays fine... though Im so tempted to buy a better video card just because...

well not at 1080p or 1200p, no. It would at 720p. I would gather 900p would be ok on medium settings with that config but if your gaming on 1920x1080, I would bet 5870/6870 desktop cards would struggle keeping 500 people on the screen at the same time along with the world mapping and NPC's above 30 fps, prob be close and this seems to happen all the time your playing to.

What you can do is when you know your going to be playing with 100's of other people you can use the quick tool bar setting in the video section which allows you to turn your settings from one spot to another, this makes is easy so when your going to be alone questing or with just a few people you can crank the settings way up but when your going to be in massive raid groups you can turn the settings to minimal.

that's just how games are. overtime, analysts will find the absolute most efficient combinations for classes because you can only be as good as the game will let you.

all games are like this. if the game was purely balanced, it wouldn't be any fun. there wouldn't be any roles to fill as you would equally fill all of them.

you would probably have to turn it down for mass pvp but otherwise I would think it would be ok. Next Beta is open so you could always try it out.
I need to check what my settings are on, Im playing at 1920x1080 and it looks awesome for normal play, low end pvp and rift/invasions.
