Does it mean this game suck?
-
me and 3 friends bought it and play 1 day together and all quit. this was at the initial release maybe the game has improved who knows
-
It that bad huh?
-
Well, I haven't tried it myself, but it should be a great game according to the reviews:
Rift for PC Reviews, Ratings, Credits, and More at Metacritic -
Those review were when the game was released. Those reviewer didn't even play 10 days of that game, so it really should be taken off.
-
we all played wow before and quit it because of the lack of content to try rift. turns out rift has 3x less stuff to do. from lvl 1-20 there 1 battleground which is utter garbage and 1 instance.
-
Then it sound like another Warhammer clone.
-
It's a decent WoW clone. The classes and skill system is interesting, though there is enough theorycrafting out there that its basically killed off any creativity if you plan on doing serious content.
Endgame outside of raiding is pretty nonexistent, unless you consider dungeon and faction grinding endgame. The rifts are fun the first dozen or so times until you realize almost all of them are some form of tank and spank. Zonewide invasions are pretty much the same, if it requires any sort of coordination plan on each stage taking at least an hour or two. That is unless you fail by not completing the objectives.
Crafting is average. No real incentive to even go into it considering there aren't any bind on pickup epics and you can sell mats for more than the items are worth.
PvP is entertaining, if shallow. Their versions of Murderball (Black Garden), Arathi Basin (Codex), and Alterac Valley (Port Scione) are entertaining. Whitefall Steppes, which is their version of WSG is horrible. Map is too large and easily trivialized by a properly specced rogue. Openworld pvp is basically nonexistent. Endgame pvp is a horrible valor grind though, especially since you only have those 4, well basically 3 warfronts to do.
That being said, $10 for a month of this is a bargain if you're not tired of themepark MMOs yet. Rift doesn't really try anything new, but it does look pretty for the most part. Gear is either really ugly or simple and clean to most people. Trying out the different callings and seeing how different souls (classes) synergize together is pretty fun. The dungeons are decently done, if a bit heavy on the trash.
Whether or not this game appeals to you really depends on how much you like WoW style themepark MMOs. Compared to WoW I would say there is roughly the same amount of stuff to do. I consider the Rifts a wash compared to WoW's much more varied and interesting quests and lore. Other than that you can basically play Rift the same way you play WoW.
On the other hand there are enough F2P MMOs out there that I would suggest saving your $10 if you don't want an experience similar to WoW. There is a free trial if you want to mess around before you buy it, and if seems like it has gone on sale for around $10-$30 for the past month anyways. -
F2p mmo's like hellgate london and (soon) age of conan trample games like this.
Also gw2 / tor coming up. Gw2 especially will be one of the first "next-gen" mmos where there is less button-smashing and more direct control of characters.
Don't even bother with this. -
Of course not! I'm playing fps Rune of Magic in await for my long anticipated (4 years waiting, most anticipated game of my life) in Guild Wars 2. First day purchase, and first game where I would not even bother reading the review.
-
Thought I read somewhere that the $10 gets you the game, but with no game time. So essentially $25 bucks.
I could be wrong but that is what I head. -
I'm curious whether you have some kind of inside information where you learned that all of the reviewers only played for 10 days or less.
Anyways, i was in the beta and while i enjoyed the class mechanics the game itself was just another glorified clone. Once you looked at the classes and combinations you noticed they were similar to what WoW offers.
The opening of rifts was a nice touch though. I didn't play enough to reach any higher levels, mostly because it became boring quickly.
AOC is already F2P but people are reporting that you don't get much content as f2p and essentially forces you to buy a premium account. -
The PVE is very enjoyable. I played the game with a few friends for 2-3 months until RL took over and I quit all/any MMO I was playing.
PVP on the other hand isn't that good. It feels like the BG's were designed in a day by college students.
Overall, the game is fun/good for a few months and I'd recommend it (especially at 10$). You'll get at least 2-3 months of entertainment if you play casual like me.
Never listen to "professional reviews", they're a waste of time for the most part. Any "reviewer" that just looks at the negative aspects of the product or enters the review with a bias opinion is not a reviewer at all. A true review has to have both the pros and the cons with extensive use of the product. -

If it was F2P id get it just to play a few friends but im not going to fall into the trap of a cheap up front purchase price and then have to pay a monthly fee to play.
Pay 2 Play games could be given away for free honestly and they would still make money as thats where the revenue is at and where people get hooked.
If you do find one game you like enough to play sure paying $120 to $180 a year in sub fee's is fine, but for me I cant justify it when there are other games to play for free that can hold my time just as well and there is no withdrawl when you stop playing because you put so much money/time into the game. -
I played during beta and the first 2 months, though I was pretty intent on raiding, so I basically stormed through 0-50 which kind of took a lot of the enjoyment out for me. It's definitely a fun game if you don't burn through it like I did, and even when my guild and I got to 50, I just didn't find the raiding to be that fun, or the guild for that matter, which I had joined during beta. Had I raided with my guild from WoW, it would have been a lot more enjoyable, but then that's more playing the game because the people are fun and not the game. Plus I think I found myself comparing it too much to WoW.
The main draw of the game for me was the multiple specs you could have and how easy it was to switch between them, made forming and adjusting groups a lot easier with people being able to play different roles, but other than that, I found pvp to be sub par and the crafting decent enough.
RIFT is 10 bucks on Steam...
