Is Apple's new MacBook Pro a gaming machine?
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-10066047-52.html?tag=TOCmoreStories.0
Seriously, who do they hire to write this crap, some of my favorite quotes:
"It's more of a gaming machine than the old MacBook Pro," said Mike Schramm, a blogger who writes for both the video game site Joystiq and The Unofficial Apple Weblog. "The weak point in Apple's hardware has always been the integrated graphics chip. The computers have always been blazing fast, but the 3D graphics have been chugging away on an old Intel chip. And the new Nvidia chips will fix that problem."
Schramm himself said that he plans to eventually buy one of the new MacBook Pros to indulge his passion for World of Warcraft, and he said he expects that many games that have traditionally run only on PCs will now be Mac friendly. "
and the best one:
"For guys who want to have gaming, but don't want to spend all that much, those guys will be more than happy with the MacBook Pro."
Haha, the cost savings of a Macbook pro.
I'm not trying to bash Macs, but this article does them a severe dis-service by spreading a ton of misinformation. They're solid machines, but for reasons other than what they mention in this article.

I think the main reason they moved to a much higher performing graphics card was because they know many people run boot camp to be able to play their games, and I think this move is to slowly eat away at other's marketshare.
-
Well it is true that the new Macbook Pros are better for games than the older ones, but in no instances are they exactly a cheap alternative. Macbooks already cost a bunch and for the same price, you could get a Sager or another brand at better settings.
The correct sentence would've been:
"For those who like to game, but are Mac fanboys, this is a good alternative" lol -

But its not, its just the next generation mid range card. And old macbook pros could play WoW. And just because a machine can run WoW, by no means makes it a gaming machine.

I love CNET's review. "For guys who want to have gaming, but don't want to spend all that much, those guys will be more than happy with the MacBook Pro." For $2399, you can get a killer Alienware laptop with a 8800M GTX.
-
obvious marketing ploy by apple, and Cnet staff senseless love for Macs.
seriously Macs are for people who dont know how to use a computer.
figuratively and literally foolproof.
2399$$?! i could get a gateway gaming laptop and build a gaming desktop for that price! and maybe an ipod -
macs... affordable. nice, that great, I'm going to have to rememeber this one. lol

Step 1: Write article about something new and hot.
Step 2: Wait for people to link to it.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit! -
I hate CNet.. always have, always will. That's why I come to forums.. to get real (hopefully) people's opinions on products.

The only big use I really have for their site is their huge downloads site. -

The article said that the new MBPs would have the 9400M and 9600M. Does that mean they're going to do Hybrid SLI similar to AMD's Hybrid CF?
-
No. I think it may be an either/or type of thing.
-
I've been a MacBook Pro gamer for over a year now (Spend 98% of my time in BootCamp Vista Ultimate).
I'm using the 'older' 8600m GT (GDDR3) and while I believe it functions very well as a midrange gaming machine, if all you are worried about is gaming, why on EARTH would you spend over 2000 dollars for this laptop?
Also, this GPU, and any GPU better can EASILY max out World of Warcraft without a sweat. My girlfriend has been running WoW between 8-20 FPS using medium settings on a GMA 950 for over a year now. WoW is a great example of a scalable graphics engine, but it is by no means a good test of gaming hardware.
I got a MacBook Pro because I liked the hardware, form factor, and Apple style. I didn't buy it for the operating system. I didn't buy it for a high-end gaming experience (and to be fair, the best card at the time was the 7950m GTX, which was an older generation card). I justified the price by acknowledging that this will by my only computer for over 4 years. -
Apple marketing's at its best...*sigh* -
I think we don't even need to comment on this ridiculous stuff. Commenting only gives them unnecessary publicity.
-
Cnet is just awful... a few years ago I got all my tech info from Cnet but it wasn't until engadget that I realized just how poorly educated many of the Cnet editors are. Honestly, they know very little about computer hardware. Read a number of their laptop/desktop reviews and you'll see.
-
The previous Macbook Pro was a better deal and closer to the performance curve than the current one.
The 9600m isn't a bad GPU, but with the macbook price so high and a $1300 Gateway with a 9800m GTS, its annihilated in price/performance so badly that even a complete mac fanboi should have enough sense.
Let's say they managed to fit in a 9700m GTS... this is closer to the curve, would likely be able to be cooled even in the macbook pro casing with some good design, and while the macbook pro would be more expensive than PC offerings, it wouldn't be so badly outranked.
If they got in an 9800m GTS... this ranks alongside the better PCs and the smaller size would make the "mac premium" not so hard to digest.
As it stands the normal macbook took a step forward, and the macbook pro took a step-and-a-half back. -
If the author worked for me, he'd have just lost his job for proving his mental incompetence. Seriously, do people even learn about a subject before they preach about it now days?
-
The CNET reviews itself > a lot of their "blog" entries.
The core staff is way better on reviews especially. -
-
of course they lie to us for profit. Everyone does that everywhere. Same as with stupid people that vote with their phones for Americas got talent or american idol. They dont count the votes the producers decide who should win and who goes out, yet they say that we decide and tons of stupid people votes like crazy and waste money. Its like this in all businesses so dont let it surprise u that they write this stuff. The human race always want something i return and profit is the keyword in this world.

Because other market systems are lie free...
(after all in Soviet Russia or China, the gun to your head or tank in front of you told you that everything the government said was the truth!)
Yes, positive CNET reviews are probably purchased...
Marketing in ANY market system is about lies. -

Macs are still and will always probably be a ripoff, buy hey, I'm not telling you what to spend YOUR money on.

I like cNet overall. The articles and the reviews are top notch in my opinion and very honest.
Their forums are a NIGHTMARE however. Which is why I go this forum and others for help or advice.
And I don't think they're Apple loyalists. They're simply saying the truth.
But yeah Macs are WAY too expensive. I was configuring an iMac on the Apple Store earlier today and like SEVERAL of their optional programs cost $999.99!?
I literally freaked out. At one point I reached a total of over $4,000 for a computer that I didn'it think was that strong. -
I find C|Net having good content overall on some domains like mp3 players and popular gear and brands. They are very critic about product and are able to decently point out pros and cons.
As for computers, gaming and more specialized product, I just don't trust them since they don't even take time to review those products. Its obvious there are a bit sold to big sponsors like Samsung, .Apple or .Dell...so is PC Magazine or PCWord (who owns MacWorld).
As for the new .Macbook Pro being a gaming machine, except for the price tag, you can really get something good out of it. The only problem I would point out is the heat. For a student, this is just great since you can game on the 9600M GT while taking notes in class with the 9400M. Many people forget the fact that this laptop is less than an inch thick so you can't put something really powerful inside.
The part of the blog I didn't like was really:
-
-
I like this part, or should I say dislikes
"But he said that with most games, MacBook Pro users would not notice the difference. In some cases, as with the most graphics-intensive games, Wang predicted that the frame rates of the new Macs would be slightly lower than on the best gaming machines."
Oh no you would not notice a difference to say an XPS M1730 with 8800m GTX SLI at all in matter of framerates, detail and high resolutions the games are playable at. What do they think the MacBook Pro defies the law of physics or hardware for that matter
Seems like they think a Macbook Pro is God and performs 2-3x better due to the better "components" as most Mac fanboys put it than a similiar or even better PC.
I don´t see why they never realize a Mac is not for gaming, if you want to game you get a PC that´s it. If you hate Vista/XP that much but still wants to game, what do you do. Sure bootcamp works, but there is no High end Mac comparable to High end PC´s that is upgradable too at least some in the notebook world and all in the desktop world. Thus you will never get the same high framerate as a high end PC nor at higher resolutions.
And I think it´s hilarious when Mac owners say PC has so much problem with piracy, yeah I think all Mac people are so honest so they can´t nor don´t download Vista or XP for that matter for "free" to boot up on their Mac. What a totally waste of money. Isn´t that what they usually say, they have Windows yet they buy/download it to play games on, something fishy is going on don´t you think. Ah always nice for some early morning rant
I just say check out a guy named Emeek77 on youtube, the worlds most ridiculous fanboy that even said if an 8800GTX would have been in a Mac Pro it would have been 3x faster than if it were in a PC due to the operating system. Hilarous to say the least. -
Anyway C.net is probably in some kind of profitable partnership with Apple or they simply get extra credit to post top notch fake reviews. They probably earn a lot on it and they don't have much to loose. The site is so high ranked in Google etc that visitors and money income for the site wont be a problem to them even if they do lie, so basically they can post whatever non sense they like as long as they get something in return for it. -
macs are GREAT computers, in terms of build quality/style/functionality. but seriously, they aren't the best bang for the buck. mac=budget gaming rig? No chance.
-
-
Yeah I remember the game. Kane and Lynch-Dead Men.
-
yea and he was pretty much right on with his review lol

macs are too expensive
