Discuss what RTS and strategy games you like! I prefer old style/medieval ones. I do not like turn based ones. Recommend good ones as well!

I used to play Dawn of War, all of them except Soulstorm, with my friends online.
However it's not medieveal but I still highly recommend it.
You can play many races, each with different structures, vehicles, infantry and research.

Ok, I like the medieval II serie, but also the "modern" ones.
Company of Heroes and World in Conflict are still the best ones out according to me! -
Supreme Commander rocks, though it isn't historical (it's scifi). I second RoN...erm... there are a bunch more, heh.
-
I may be the only one here, but I really liked playing Star Wars: Empire at War. I also liked Rise of Nations, Dawn of War, and the Command and Conquer series.
Currently I'm looking for a new RTS to play, so hopefully some of you guys will give some good suggestions. -

sirtmetman- I have SC and Universe at War, and I can't seem to get into them...they are really complicated to me, and I like RoN stuff (times and such) better...should I give them a good try with the tutorials and such?
-
My all time fave rts game is age of empires 2 but i like all age of empires games. I also like company of heroes, world in conflict and a bunch of others.

Age of Empires III was a letdown for me from the other 2.
-
What about space strategy Homeworld 2. Very good gameplay considering how old it is. I currently play World in Conflict and Company of Heroes. Neither one is better than the other for me. I like them both. Don't forget the "Lord of the Rings-Battle for Middle Earth" games (1 & 2 + Rise of the Witch King).
-
Although the graphics were a nice touch with rag doll physics and better collision detection/reaction. The game play and maps left ALOT to be desired. Personally I play Empire earth series, stronghold series, warcraft 1 and 2, and SC series. I don't have a preference on time period although a good ancient warfare (e.g classical Greece, rome, Egypt, ect) RTS does get me all giddy inside. As for turn based, I have never been a big fan of turn based games in general.
-
In addition to the classics already mentioned, don't forget Sins of a Solar Empire. It's rts space strategy game that's a mixture of GalCiv2, supreme commander (in scale), and homeworld, picking up a lot of the good points from each.
-
Jeeze, how could I forget Sins. And yes, tutorials can be helpful for SupCom.
-
Guitarrasdeamor Notebook Evangelist
Hmm, I will try those out then.
-
The 2 biggest things to remember with SupCom are distance (most games these days are about close in fighting; SupCom is not) and building proximity bonuses (try building a power plant right next to a mass extractor, or a mass storage building next to a mass extractor... or any mass or energy producer next to a mass or energy consumer). Also, make good use of the field of fire views to strategically place your defenses to ensure overlapping fields of fire and attacks on incoming enemies from multiple simultaneous angles. Remember that projectiles are calculated in real time; hits are not based upon some hit% calculation. This means you have to change how you think about concentrating fire from focusing on single point batteries to multi point outposts that cover each other.

starcraft and in a cuple months SC2!!!!

Sounds like it will take a lot of planning and getting used to
-
Nope your not the only one,I still play that game!
-
I've been wanting to play Supreme Commander for a long time, but I hear that the battles can take hours, which is understandable. What I'm most worried about is that overtime, it will lag. Is this true?
-

Not if it is optimized well...that is one thing about Empire Earth III I HATED. When I could play it, it would be fine for a while, then bog down everything as the game progressed.
-
Hmmm the only RTS I have is Empire Earth, the first one.
I was going to get C&C 3 recently but decied to get the orange box instead... -
SupCom will slow down later in the game, but not to the point that it even approaches unplayable. Really, I don't know if there is a way they could avoid it. I mean, there is only so much you can do when you have battles with 4 sides, each having 300 units, all shooting at each other with projectiles that have to have their trajectories and collision calculated and their graphics and lighting effects displayed. They did a good job though. Even on pretty high graphics settings, I never had problems that impacted my ability to play, even on my old desktop that has an AGP Geforce 7800 and AMD 64 3800+ with only 2GB of RAM.
-
Well it's good to know that it won't slow down too bad. My laptop is fairly new and I'm pretty sure it could handle it. Still not entirely sure if I want to get it, but I think I probably will. It seems like such an awesome game.
Thanks for your reply to my question. -

If I don't fancy it you can buy my copy,

Age of Mythology is one of my favourites. Literally lost months to it. Great strategy, visuals and variety. Strongly recommended.
-
Age of Mythology has great trample!
-
Agreed
. One vote for AOM, I like Command and conquer 3 series and the C&C Generals series as well.
-
I like the Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun games over the Command and Conquer Red Alert games....
Isn't it AOE III that is $9.99 at Walmart? I was kinda thinking about just getting it. Are the other two really that much better? -
RA2 was great...
I still play AoE 2. I played Dawn of War quite alot over the last 2 years, mostly on LAN, not so much now.
-
I'm surprised that no one mentioned Total Annihilation. That was probably my favorite RTS. I have played SupCom, but didn't stick with it. Now I joined the SCII band wagon and can't wait.
-
Well your gonna have to wait till 2009 like the rest of us.Damn Blizzard and their damn good looking video games with their damn long release dates!
-
LOL. That's true. Did they change it to 2009, or are you just assuming that they will delay it?
-
SupCom was the spiritual successor to TA. TA rocks, but personally, I think SupCom improves on the formula. Hell, honestly, strategic zoom alone is a significant improvement. After playing SupCom for a week or 2, I went to play some other games (I think the first one was Company of Heros), and among the first things I noticed was "oh yeah, I can't do the super zoom any more". Strategic zoom is so great, imo. It does a bunch to increase situational awareness (as when you zoom out, you aren't losing your frame of reference like you do with a minimap) and to ease navigation around the map on screen. Then the whole system of proximity bonuses and the focus of fields of fire just add icing to the cake.

Mmm. I did notice that, and thought the zoom was a cool feature.
