I'm looking to buy a racing game for the PC. I would like something in between arcade style and full simulation. So therefore, not too fake and not too realistic. I'm torn between three games right now but if you have any other suggestions outside the three I'd gladly take them.

    Choices thus far:

    1. GRID
    2. Burnout Paradise
    3. NFS Shift

P.S. If the game includes a Mustang, that'd be a nice bonus! :D

Hmm, yeah. But that's a rally cross racing game, I'd prefer street or track racing.

Get both GRID and Shift, I believe they both have the Mustang.

Shift is slightly more simulatory than GRID, if you turn on all the realism settings.

Hmm. I think I might try Shift first. Seems to have more of the cars I like and it's newer. Also seems to have been polished up a good bit since I last tried the demo.

NFS Shift lets you do the "Works," complete overhaul to make racing ready on the Nissan R35 GTR, what a beast. Easily the fastest car in the Tier 3 and compete in Tier 4 for the game.

Also the GT version of the Nissan is actually V8, weird huh? Oh well.
    - Literally laps circles around the Corvette and other competitors. So awesome!

Looks like it's going to be Shift unless someone convinces me otherwise before I leave Uni after my last class today (11AM).

I installed Shift today, I haven't played enough to tell something solid.

But, at first view, the graphics seems to be worst than Grid, the Texture of the opponents seems to be loading too late, in a far view, the other cars look like they are flying.

    I'm running with full settings.

I got Shift. I personally think it looks great. I'm running it at 1920 x 1200 with 2xAA and 8xAF with everything maxed. Still getting used it, but I still need a lot of practice on cornering.

You wanna hook up online lucretio? My in-game name is usapatriot.

If you don't mind an older game, I'd suggest NFS 3: Hot Pursuit. Loads of fun. :D
You can get it second hand at the amazon marketplace.

I play GTR1 & 2, Live for Speed and Richard Burns Rally. All 3 are GREAT games, if maybe I prefer Live For Speed just a litte bit more seems a little bit more realistic.

I gotta say that GTR Evolution and Dirt 2 are two of the best games i have played with a racing wheel, I am using a G25,Grid is not really that playable with a wheel, its more arcade than some other game and is really only good with a pad imo. I just hope that Codemasters up and coming F1 game will be just as good as Gtr and Dirt 2.

Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed, ofc. BC graphics ofc but try to do the factory driver and the career with a Steering Wheel. Man, I still play that old thing.

I'm really having a blast with NFS Shift. I think if offers more in-depth gameplay than GRID. You can customize just about everything on the car and tune them as well. Plus, the game looks really great. However, people seem to have a love/hate relationship with Shift. You either love the game or hate it. I love it.

Probably too realistic for him, I play plenty of GTR2 and GTR Evo and I love it because I'm an F1/sportscar nut but it is certainly a simulation if you run with all the aids off and actually work on the car's setup. In the lesser modes, it feels more arcade but it's not really "fun" because it's supposed to be a sim of the FIA GT 2003/2004 seasons with no storyline and the AI are pretty awful. Then again, nothing is quite as fun as having a bunch of competitive people racing online together in a long race full of changing weather, sunset, and pitstops.

Yeah, GTR is actually a racing simulator, not really an arcade racing game.

I was wondering out of NFS Shift, Dirt2 or Grid, which is the best for multiplayer? Easiest to hook up to a game, good connections and good community. Or even other racers other than the ones I mentioned.

I still haven't got a new racer for my new laptop.

DIRT 2 is probably gonna have the highest player numbers since it's newer. I personally have not had a problem finding people to play with online in Shift, except that they are exceptionally experienced.

Of course, it might all come down to what you prefer. Rally vs. track racing.

    GTR 2011 > GTR2 :D

Wrt the OP for the PC i'd say NFS Shift or NFS Prostreet for that happy medium between arcade and sim. For the 360 i'd say NFS: Shift, NFS: Prostreet, Project Gotham 3/4, Forza 2/3.

Dirt 2 is supposed to be quite excellent with the wheel and pedals, reading a lot they did a great job if you want the simulation experience.

One thing to note, clutch doesn't really work since Rally Racers never touch the clutch while racing.

Is there a short and simple explanation of why? I don't know much about cars

I was actually thinking about getting Shift myself, but I played it on a friend's 360 and had a real bad issue with turns (probably too much GT4), and I'm not sure how well it'll run on my huge display + mediocre graphics.

I always felt the need to smash my controller when playing the NFS games, so if I were to play any racegames on my pc (which costs more too replace) it would be games similiar too mario kart racing or those racegames with crash bandicoot which are more kiddy and relaxing ^^

In rally racing they use a sequential gearbox, similar in practice to what they use in F1 and high-end cars like the Nissan GTR and some other supercars. It's a manual transmission under the hood, but has an electronic clutch.
