I just bought an HP dv5z (2.1 ghz AMD Turion, 2 GB, 256 MB Radeon 3450) and Doom 3 is completely unplayable (less than 10 fps) , even with everything turned off on low resolutions. This doesn't seem right. I have updated my drivers, and I've freshly reinstalled Vista. Aero is disabled and I'm not running any other programs simultaneously. I am on AC power.

What's going on, and how do I fix it?

Make sure the power options are set to Balance or High Performance.

And if the 3200 uses PowerPlay, turn it off as well.

First check power options, as everyone else has stated. If all else fails, try updating the driver.

A 3450 should be able to run Doom 3 at least at 1280x800 Medium Quality. My HD 3200 in my HTPC can do 720p Low with shadows disabled.

Are you able to run it smoothly with high settings (at 1280x800 for example)? Wonder if the 3450 is capable of that!
