I'm getting a new laptop for college (computer science major) and had some questions regarding these two cards.

How will the Radeon 4650 stand up to the 770M when it comes to compiling programs? I'm leaning towards getting the 770M but am making sure that the 4650 doesn't beat it at its own game per say (at what it was designed to do).

My main focus of this laptop will be to last 5 years, good battery life, etc... I'm looking for quality. The 4650 comes in a Compal KHLB2 and the 770M comes in an HP 8530w and a Lenovo W500.

    Thanks in advance.

I would go with the radeon 4650 because you would get better battery life.

I thought the Radeon was more demanding? Also, choosing that would be choosing the KHLB2 notebook over the others. Do you think that would be the best choice?

I would personally get the 770m, but to be honest, I don't think you will be able to tell the difference between the two, just get whichever notebook you like the most.

I'd go with either one to be honest, the 770m will be better optimized for OpenGL, CAD, and more "practical" apps, while the 4650 is pretty good in all regards, with the strong suit being gaming. As long as you don't get the HP, you're good with either graphics card. If I was in your position, I'd probably go with the Compal with the 4650 just because the difference probably wouldn't be too different with practical apps and with gaming you probably would notice the difference in framerate.

You can always flash it to its gaming counter part if preffered

True but that would be a pain in the butt, and the GPU would optimized towards a specific functionality too plus who knows how the manufacturer would view that in case something did happen.

Tough decision. This notebook isn't going to be for gaming though. I will play some games on it but this is for college and if anything playing games will only hurt me when I'm there.

I've read a lot of reviews on the compal (even here) that question its quality which makes me nervous about purchasing it. That's why I'm leaning towards the HP or Lenovo.

    What do you guys think?

I have a 770 and it works pretty good for gaming, and it's better supported in linux than ATI if that is a consideration.

Thanks for the info Zoid. But how do the compiling speeds of the 770 and 4650 compare?

Looks like the Lenovo comes with the FireGL V5700. How much slower will it be compared to the others? Please include the following: (copy and paste if you wish)

In general: V5700 < FX 770M, don't really know where HD 4650 is though.
    In gaming: V5700 < FX770M < HD 4650

sgogeta4, I know the V5700 will be slower than the FX 770M but how noticeable will it be?

And the main thing I want to know is how the 4650 will compare in compiling/programming in general.

The W500 and 8530w notebooks have the v5700 (can't afford to get the 770m) but if cards like the 4650 or 9600m gt out perform the V5700 in what it was made to do then there's no point in getting it.

Compiling and programming are CPU things AFAIK.... A 4650 will do the job easily, my local University's "laptop of choice" for Engineering students comes with the quadro version of the GD 8400M GS/9300 M GS

That's CPU from the console or in a terminal....means nothing there
