So I just got said video card in my new laptop. I figured I'd pay the extra few bucks in the DV6tqe and just upgrade from the 6630 (off of memory, I think that's what it was.) However, I neglected to look up power consumption of the two. So I'm curious about power consumption of the card, and if there's a way to simply turn the GPU off.

No switcheable graphics via Sandy Bridge = Not likely you can switch off the GPU to save power.

just right click the desktop, and voilá there should be an option to chose between the cards.

and the gpu in the dv6 is a 6470m (when you dont pay for the upgrade)

These are two conflicting answers. Not to sound skeptical, but do either of you own a laptop with an i7 and this gpu?

Try Mr MM's suggestion first, if it's not there then you can't switch off the dedicated GPU to save power.

It's up to the manufacturer to enable switchable graphics.

That said, I would've put this in the HP as actual owners could better help you...

yes you can change the display adapter tothe intel 3000 to save power, but you have to do it manually as opposed to automatically like nvidia cards + optimus will
