Hey, need to help a friend out with a purchase and need some help:

    The GPUs are as below:

    A 256MB Mobility Radeon X1600
    And a 512MB Hypermemory Mobility Radeon X1600

Now I know the 512MB ( 256 shared, 256 dedicated ) is shared, but is the 256MB shared at all? e.g. 128mb shared / 128mb dedicated. I know it isn't stated but i need to be sure ;)

Another point, would the extra memory on the radeon X1600 make any difference at all in the next gen games ( i.e. oblivion/fear etc, and those that would be released next year ) since I've heard that the difference between 256mb and 512mb notebook cards is very minimal or non existant with today's games.

    Thanks

While I do not believe there is a 256MB X1600 that has shared memory, I could be wrong.

Who makes the laptop, and what model is it?

The Radeon X1600 actually can use HyperMemory, but it makes no differece. HyperMemory's implementation is entirely software-based and it is really only something for the low-end cards (integrated graphics, X1300).

As long as the X1600 has 256MB of dedicated memory I would not worry about anything. Even if it had 512MB dedicated that would not give it a useful advantage since it can't use all that memory.

Thanks for answerin my questions both of you.. and also I got another query..

If you have a 5400rpm HDD and a 7200rpm HDD will there be a significant difference while gaming with the 5400, and what kind of difference. just general PC lag?

The hard drive does not affect the in-game performance; a faster hard drive will only decrease the loading times of the game. For games, the most important components are the GPU first, amount of RAM second, and CPU third.
