I just got Rage, and after installing and updating I start the game. The game starts, the ID logo appears then I get these errors:
0(46) : error C1115: unable to find compatible overloaded function "texelFetch(sampler2DMS, ivec2, int)"
then

I am currently using the 197.15 drivers and they have worked for every single game I own perfectly. I would rather not change my Display drivers, as they work perfectly and give me great fps, better than the newer ones after much testing. Anyone can think of a solution?

Those drivers are ancient and do not support the version of OpenGL that Rage requires to run. You will have to upgrade if you want to play. -
Is it possible to update my OpenGL while remaining on 197.15?
-
If only that particular game have that particular dll security vulnerability, then yes. All you need to do is to copy the opengl library that came with the new driver into the root of your game folder. (Basicially update per basis)
Unfortunately, I don't what that file called for Nvidia's since I have yet came across a problem that required that workaround other than AMD's.
Edit: Extract the latest nvidia driver package and copy nvoglv32.dll ...

This is the same fix for AMD, the same method. I've been recommending just copying the OpenGL driver into the root folder for Rage, and it's working wonders. I'd expect the same from Nvidia.
- Also not sure how this affects Nvidia. But Rage texture files are decoded in real time. This decoding is done with CUDA on Nvidia and it's done by CPU for AMD. Maybe the new drivers are good idea? -
Well, the general idea is, in order to play the latest games is to use at least the drivers that the developer started to develop on or later.
Even with my solution I posted above, there is a chance it may not work cause the newer opengl drivers might be calling functions that doesn't exist in your current video driver. -
I have no idea why people still use year old drivers. It woudln't suprize me if new PC games requires lastest GPU driver, in order to be able to play the game. Not that it is going to happend...
-
@tunay
The reason for it is some older drivers might be better optimized for older GPU's. At least in my experience the few drivers that came out after mine were worst in performance, and I never encountered any issues with mine. So as the old saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I tried your solution Falco152 but I get a WerFault error before the game starts. Would it be foolish to try and copy other .dll files in the root folder? -
Doubtful. Both Nvidia and AMD provide unified drivers that support older GPUs perfectly fine and optimized.
Both Nvidia and AMD recommend latest drivers if the drivers support your GPU.
And both Nvidia and AMD recommend installing latest drivers for latest games. -
Okay, so I just installed the 285.27 drivers after reviewing a few of drivers on laptopvideo2go.
Nhancer is not compatible with this version but that doesn't seem to be a problem since the entries were saved in the Registry any way.
I just fired up Rage maxed settings @ 1920x1200 and I'm amazed to be a constant 47 fps. Also tried playing The Witcher 2 to test fps and I am getting slightly higher fps than on my old ones, around 33-35 now average instead of 28-32.
Really impressed so far
glad I made the leap.

How are you keeping your laptop cooled with that OC'ed gpu? Also whats your cpu?
-
I actually found that these new drivers result in lower GPU temperatures as well. I used to overheat a lot when I first applied these overclock settings to my GPU (these are not actually the max that I have reached, but a bit lower). Then I took apart my laptop and applied some ICD7 to my GPU and memories. Ever since I have not had any problems with heat, and today after testing Rage for a couple of hours I saw on GPUZ that my temperatures maxed around 70 C. My CPU gets a bit more hot at 3.2Ghz and maxes out at around 75. I'll upload a video of how Rage runs for me later this afternoon when I have a more stable internet connection to Upload to Youtube.
-
Second this.
I don't care if I lose 5 FPS, as long as I'm on updated drivers and games don't crash. It also does not suprize me that you get lower tempratures with new drivers. -
The GPU is hardly used in Rage, a lot of the calculations are offloaded onto the CPU, you can enable GPU transcoding which reduces the load on the CPU and shunts it back to the GPU.
-
It is maybe 'hardly used' but it is enough to prevent him from playing the game at all while running on outdated drivers
-
I know his feelings tbh, I'm running a HDX, the only way to get it to play nice with newer drivers is to disable powermizer, this basically means I'm running Max clocks constantly, luckily the HDX is so huge it still idles at 50c even on max clocks.
-
I just posted a video with my very first gameplay on my Lappy. Very happy with the new drivers. Check it out

You'll notice no Texture popping and none of the many bugs that tormented people who tried to play the game on release. -
what were the before temperatures before applying the ICD7
and what kind of cpu do you have? Core 2? -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Excellent! I was curious too about the older drivers being better for older hardware, but this is certainly great news, I'm glad it worked out for you
-
Before applying the new Thermal Paste I was constantly crashing after 10 minutes of MW2. GPU temperatures would shoot up towards 90-95 then the drivers would crash. I didn't have an extreme CPU back then, so the CPU was fine.
Now I have the x9100, which is an extreme Dual Core cpu, and temps max around 75, while the GPU maxes out around 79 and it's been over 8 months since I last applied ICD7.
Thanks, bro. If I had heard the same thing from another user I might have made the upgrade sooner too
Old drivers used to be so buggy that changing them was always scary, since you would have to go through the process of uninstalling, wiping drivers, reinstalling and reconfiguring over and over. I'm probably going to stick with these for a while.
-
I really wanna paste mine with ICD7 or AS5, but not sure how that will play with warranty. They just said opening anything will void it, but I get high temps
-
Well, I had a few months left on warranty when I opened mine and that was almost 2 years ago, lol. Unless you just got your laptop I would go ahead and apply the thermal paste, the gains from lower temps are amazing. Trust me.
-
10 months left on the warranty .__.

Dude I'm in love with your voice!! Awesome video!

I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING CONTROLLER WITH RAGE!
The AI in this game are the most dynamic, and fastest of any I've seen in an FPS game. They climb everywhere, swinging from ledges, pipes etc. They dodge, roll, duck, hide, charge. Controller would suck with this IMO, gotta use mouse and keyboard. At least on insane mode, because you die fast. -
Don't know want controller you used, but my 360 wireless controller is having no problem with this game on hard.
Just shot another baddie trying to dodge LOL
-
Then ID Software must have very nice auto-aim for controllers on the PC version without affecting Keyboard and Mouse. How nice for you controller users
-
I have a 360 Logitech controller too as you probably heard from the video. It does have some auto aim support I think, not having any difficulty so far.
-
You wait till you get to the authority guys, all the sewers and the mutant bash I cleared with fists as the mutants are that easy
, even the bandits die to a buckshot in the face easily.
-
Just realized that disabling GPU re-encoding raises the constant fps from 30 to 60. Lol, this game runs incredibly well just like Dead Island did.
