On Steam, does anyone own this? How could anyone justify the price of 617 euros for the game and all DLC?!?!?!

My father in-law is that crazy, he spent over $10k on building 6+ computers so he could play his flight simulator with monitors for all the windows and display panels. Never underestimate how crazy people can go on things.

It's a natural progression for model train fanatics, now instead of building extreme model landscapes and railroads, some are taking the computer route with better details, more and broader things to do, at the sacrifice of the hands-on modeling aspect of the hobby.

But yes, the main emotions I feel upon seeing a new Railworks DLC on the Steam new games feed are bewilderment and a bit of contempt. I wish I could block all Railworks stuff from showing up in Steam, really - when I see that there are 42 games on sale and then discover that 39 of them are different nostalgia engines on Railworks, I really wish I had that 30 seconds of my life back.

My grandfather has quite the collection of model trains*, and he is a computer fanatic as well. I'm sure if he was younger he would buy Railworks in a heartbeat. It is a matter of disposable income and people's interests... I really don't like to judge games before I play them, and this is one I cannot afford to play.

hmm i'm sure thats all fine with people not minding it or having it as such a heartfelt hobby they want it, but to charge such a sum of money? how much are the costs of creating this game and the DLC? each DLC contains what, 3 models of a train? some are the same train with a different number on the side. how can such a sum of money be justified for what you get?

I cant justify that for all the DLCs and the game. Personally I just bought the game and Ill wait till DLCs are under 5$ and buy a few at a time... remember everything will go down in price over time.

Its not what everyone is making it out to be... I never liked modeled trains. Its basically driving a train though, following speed limits signals etc.

Well, they add new scenarios with each DLC, which means a lot of map design. Their customer base is likely much more limited than most games, so they have that niche product premium because they need a higher profit-per-unit margin because of the limited units. Besides, if a model train fanatic were to buy the actual models of those engines, it would probably cost way more - I'd make a significant bet that Railworks is a cheaper hobby than model trains.

I'm still baffled by why someone would care enough about going forwards and backwards to buy Railworks and any of its DLC's, but there you have it.
