    Hi guys,

I've been using my GS60 for a while now, and have noticed that I keep getting random lag spikes, while playing any game, I would be playing and it would happen every 5 minutes or so. Based on the required performance for the games my graphics cards would have no problems dealing with the games themselves, as I've had the same issue with my Area-51, and the only thing they have in common really is the Killer Network cards. Any suggestions as to what the problem is, or any potential fixes?

    Thanks,
    J

Are you running games from the SSD or HDD?

I've encountered similar problem before, back then it was caused by unused HDD going to powersave and soon after that it restarted spinning.

This... The HDD might be going to sleep despite being always on. Use monitoring software like HWmonitor that polls the HDD temp and it keeps it spinning, to see if it's hdd related or not.

also, the killer software is a possible cause of problems. The recommended procedure to use them is to install the driver only, no application or filter or whatever. Works better this way.

Yes to the HDD issue as a good possiblity, and the solution I found works best is to disable APM/AAM after every reboot.

And, as for the Killer software. It's actually a good feature, that once tuned correctly - very easily I might add - the QOS feature allows lots of torrents / downloads to go on while watching unmolested streaming video - Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Go into the Network Manager and enter your known Upload/Download values. You can find them by running a test like speedtest.net

Here is what it looks like to enter the data in Killer Network Manager:
Nework Settings in Killer Network Manager.PNG

    That works great for me.

If I use the other method, only installing drivers, or using the Killer Suite Installer and then running it a 2nd time to remove the Filter driver and Network manager after the initial install has been done, local QOS suffers when I have heavy multiple network usage.

Using that method I get bad video performance when downloading a bunch of stuff at the same time. Just last night I downloaded a bunch of updated Linux distro's and my Hulu video kept starting and stopping.

After installing the full Killer Suite and then entering in the Upload / Download values, I can do both, watch video and have full tilt long downloads running. :)

The Network Manager has a feature to do the upload/download speed test on the same settings page:

killer manager settings automatic Speed setting now available.JPG

I have my Wifi router set for 40mhz channel width, so I am getting the same speed on Wifi and Ethernet, but if your Wifi speed is slower than when on Ethernet, be sure and redo the Speed test after switching from Wifi/Ethernet, or keep the setting on the slower of the two results.

The Update application feature works too - only shows when updates are available, otherwise the option is invisible.

And, don't forget, you can click a drop down for each running app to set it's priority, to improve performance during heavy loads.

For me it was working fine at Normal for everything, but I thought I would change it for my browsers for fun. More info after I do some more tuning, like for Steam, and Vuze, etc.

I dedicate Chrome for video playback, so I could set that for highest priority while leaving Firefox at Normal, and Vuze at lowest. After some tuning I could run everything at once without any network lag locally.

Killer Wifi Manager, another page in the Network Manager, has a Wifi Landscape view, so you don't even need another tool to view the local Wifi routers and access points. You can see right away if your router/ap is on an open channel, or a crowded one:

so the speed settings in the Killer Network Manager does matter, eh? Mine was always at 1000 Mbps for both download and upload.

Gonna change the values now but wanna add something. Before when I was using 60 Mbps with wifi, I always had maximum download speed on the 5GHz channel (depends on where I download from ofc but always maximum speed from Steam, 7.8 MBps). However, when playing online games like DotA 2, there was still some lag spikes, suddenly high ping, though quite rarely.

Not sure if it's just a problem with wifi (even though on 5GHz channel) or something with the Killer (I didn't do any tuning). Also, back then, there was only me using the my internet.

Up until very recently the Killer Suite driver had problems, more on Windows 10, but improvements have happened on both.

Yes, not setting the correct speeds in that configuration does cause lag - the values are used to calculate the usage / share for apps and could cause errors if off one way or the other.

The new Suite default values were 1500 just now on a new install.
